If you were born on 29 February

What day do you celebrate your birthday?

I have a friend who usually celebrates on 1 March and it really irritates another friend because "it should be the last day of February, as friend wasn't born in March"!

Just wondered if there's any consensus out there as I can see the logic in both arguments...

Quite frankly, the birthday person decides!!

I know of 2 options. 1 celebrates on March 1st and a 29th feb, the other does a mini 1st March plus a half birthday each year, then a big 29th Feb every 4 years.

MUjunkie · 22/03/2019 20:09

My boyfriend does 1st of March, his mum always said he was born the day after the 28th so that’s when she celebrated it when he was a kid

whiskeysourpuss · 22/03/2019 20:12

DD celebrates on the 28th as we always have done - but legally she wasn't 18 until 1st March so I guess technically it should be then

Interesting that it's legally the first! Is that a convention or is there actually a law written down somewhere?

To save confusion I think I would celebrate both Grin

Stickmanslittleleaf · 22/03/2019 20:25

If you whack out your ID on the 28th you wouldn't get served alcohol!

Stickmanslittleleaf · 22/03/2019 20:26

Presumably that's the legal part. And you couldn't marry, or buy a house, or do anything you'd need to be 18 for on the 28th.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2019 20:29

My cat was born on 29th February. We celebrated his birthday on 1st March. It just seemed premature to go on the 28th.

He is sadly no longer with us Sad.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 22/03/2019 20:31

A friend of mine. Celebrates March 1st with her family but each time the 29th comes around she has a party. The party theme is based around her "actual age". So when it was technically her 11th birthday we gave her a fake 11+ exam.

whiskeysourpuss · 22/03/2019 20:52

@Thesnobbymiddleclassone DD will officially be 5 next year & keeps asking for a party at a soft play... I really thought I was past that stage but one for grown ups has opened up in Glasgow so she might be lucky

GottenGottenGotten · 22/03/2019 20:54

whiskysourpuss that's amazing, totally do that!

Dergadgeghead · 23/03/2019 07:23

I'm leaning towards the opinion that if you're born on 29 February you practically are born in March!

We had a similar argument. DC was born on, say, 30th Sept I said casually one 30th March that it was their half-birthday. DH disagreed and said that their half birthday should have been 31st March as it is exactly six months. We disagreed. We didn't quite get around to counting days but the idea was out there.

Nearly up there with our "half a twix" argument which is unresolved to this day.

Imfinehowareyou · 23/03/2019 09:18

Balloon please elaborate on the half a twix argument 😆 I'm guessing it's about whether half a twix is one finger or half of each finger.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 23/03/2019 09:55

@BalloonSlayer half a year is 182.5. Half bday would be march 31st.

Half a twix...this has stumped me.

SgtFredColon · 23/03/2019 09:58

Half a twix is one stick isn’t it?

BalloonSlayer · 23/03/2019 10:30

In an attempt not to be outed I didn't use the right month, so I am ignoring what you have said I put the screw Grin

My point was that if your birthday was 15th Sept you would say your half birthday was 15th March, no arguments. So why should it be any different if you are born on the 30th? His was that the child was born on the last day of the month so the half birthday should be the last day of the month.

Half a twix . . . well I said that I had eaten half a twix, meaning one finger. DH said that was a whole twix because the packet has two twixes in it. I said the packet says "twix" and I had eaten half the contents, therefore: half a twix. The argument ranged on to single twixes that are also called "twix" etc and has never been resolved. I mean, we didn't start shouting at each other or anything but it was one of those discussions when both parties think the other is totally bonkers.

whiskeysourpuss · 23/03/2019 10:35

Oh I was with with you @BalloonSlayer until he put his single twix argument forward 🤔

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 23/03/2019 10:55

Ooh @BalloonSlayer just because you are disagreeing with me on the half birthday I am going to agree with your DH on the twix thing...even though you make more sense!

CostanzaG · 23/03/2019 10:58

My friend was told if you were born before midday then you celebrate on the 28th and after midday it's the 1st March.

amusedbush · 23/03/2019 11:03

My dad was born on 29th February and he celebrates on 1st March.

I agree with others that if you show ID for something on the 28th your age hasn't legally changed because it's the day before your birthday.

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 23/03/2019 11:04

I would call half a Twix finger, a quarter of a Twix! You say "I'm going to have a KitKat" not "I'm going to have four KitKats" because there are four fingers in the packet Confused

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 23/03/2019 11:05

The single Twixes you get I would call a mini Twix!

Aragog · 23/03/2019 11:15

My uncle always celebrates his birthday on the 28 Feb.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. Let's face it - neither are totally right : 28 Feb is a day early, 1 Mar is a day late.

Aragog · 23/03/2019 11:19

Though the legal stuff makes sense too - you wouldn't turn 18 until after the 28 Feb.
