Where do people without cars holiday in the UK?

Me and dh have got rid of our car because

  1. We both absolutely HATE driving
  2. we don't need one because we live in the city
  3. It saves us money.

On a day to day basis we are not affected at all, but we did used to go away a couple of times a year for weekend breaks in the car.

We've decided it would be nice to explore the UK by train but can only think of obvious places.
Does anyone know any fantastic holiday spots that are easily accessible by rail?

We're in the north east, but quite like a rail journey.

I love Great British Railway Journeys, a lovely watch.

MP is a better TV presenter than he was as a politician, although he was instrumental in keeping the Settle Carlisle railway open.

Iv not read the thread yet but I don't drive and go away semi regularly on my own for short breaks.

What I do is search for the things I want like as an example

Hot tub lodge Scotland or

Or holiday let near the sea wales etc

Then when one takes my fancy I google map it to check for nearest train station or station then a local bus to within walking distance.

There are loads of places in smaller villages that although seem like they aren't near a major train station are maybe only a half hour bus ride from the nearest town.

I stayed in a holiday park in Musselburgh recently because the local bus service ran straight to the door nearly although on a map it would look like it's half an hour outside Edinburgh which sound too far until you realise that the bus is every ten min from near the city's main train station!

Anywhere on the Cambrian coast. The train journey is lovely - great views and goes right alongside the sea in places. Aberdovy is a pretty little village; the penhelig arms us supposed to be a good place to stay. Tywyn has a caravan sure right on the beach about 10 mins walk from the station and self catering cottages. There's a Travelodge at porthmadog.

North Wales- train to Caernarfon and stay in a premier inn.

Cities- Cardiff, London, Edinburgh. Lots if places.

For mountains North Wales is pretty good. The train goes all along the coast, there's the branch line to Betws, and the Snowdon Sherpa buses go all over the national park.

Seaside resorts like Blackpool and Bournemouth are very reachable by train - that's how they became resorts in the first place!

Any car park for the novelty value

www.seat61.com is good for inspiration for train journeys.

City breaks are easy.

I go walking in the Peak District every year using the Hope Valley Line.

Our big summer holiday this year is staying at Whitesands in Pembrokeshire. We'll get the train down and use the coastal hopper buses to get around.

Look at places near train stations where you can get a taxi for the last 30 minutes or so of the journey. Obviously that only works if you're happy to walk around your immediate area.

Another point is food. We get a supermarket delivery for the night we arrive.
