With s or z?

With a z and an r Wink.

Starch · 22/03/2019 16:12

I don’t think the Z sound is that unusual really. I’d pronounce ‘observe’ and ‘basmati’ in the same manner.

I’m sure there are better examples out there, but, I’m hungry!

RomanyQueen1 · 22/03/2019 16:13

with an "s" I say "obserd"

TheMightyToosh · 22/03/2019 17:15

Agree the Z sound is actually more common than I thought.

However, for this particular word, if I was exclaiming at something being 'absolutely absurd!' I'd be using that S to the max Grin

GiantKitten · 22/03/2019 17:18

Sort of in between S & Z, but slightly more Z I think - not a hissy S like Sex but not a buzzy Z like Zoo.

MillicentMartha · 22/03/2019 17:18

With an S.

JuniorAsparagus · 22/03/2019 17:21

Same as Giant kitten - somewhere between the two.

heymammy · 22/03/2019 17:28

I'm getting so confused with all the random pronunciation going on in my head Grin but here goes:

Absurd with a z
Sexual = sec-shoo-ill (sort of)
Observe with a z
Basmati with an s

I'm Scottish which may or may not but usually does make a difference

AngeloMysterioso · 22/03/2019 17:31

I hate it when people say LinkedIn like link tin. It’s a d, not a t!!

WaterQuarter · 22/03/2019 18:04

To enunciate the d in linked you'd need to pause between linked and the in.

It's like with handbag, very few people pronounce the d. Generally people say hanbag.

AngeloMysterioso · 22/03/2019 18:27

It takes no more effort or time to pronounce a d than a t though. The handbag comparison doesn’t work because the letter that follows the d in handbag is another consonant.

howtotrainyourdragqueen · 22/03/2019 18:41

Linked does sound like Linkt in my accent though. As does passed sound like past.

OKBobble · 22/03/2019 18:52

absurd - with an s

absorb with a z

CountFosco · 23/03/2019 06:45

'ed' sounding like 't' in some words might be historic or dependent on accent since there are verbs we use that end in 't' rather than 'ed' anyway like dreamt or slept. I've found a website with them all listed. A lot that I'd consider the only correct form are described here as variant forms so I suspect in my (Scottish) accent it's more common to use the 't' rather than 'ed' ending for words.

Theresa or Thereza?

WhyDidIEatThat · 23/03/2019 07:56

OP posts:
