Do cats eat chilli?

JellySlice · 21/03/2019 20:06

Dh is enjoying a bar of Habanero chilli chocolate, and wants to know what would happen if a cat ate some.

Hmm

(Yeah, we're weird like that.)

My cat tried to eat some chilli burger once.

She didn't like it.

ValiaH · 21/03/2019 20:08

I'm pretty sure chocolate itself is harmful for cats from what I remember? And I think chilli is used as a cruel deterrent for them. So I would say, don't give the cat the chilli chocolate.

BertieBotts · 21/03/2019 20:09

I think it would be cruel to find out

chocolate is toxic to cats and chilli is definitely not one of their choices of diet in the natural world so unless you want to give your cat possible kidney failure and piss him off then i wouldnt go there

JellySlice · 21/03/2019 20:11

We don't have a cat.

wigglypiggly · 21/03/2019 20:12

The cat could become very unwell and dieConfused

Dramatical · 21/03/2019 20:19

I think death is extreme and perhaps some explosive poo would be the result.

catwithflowers · 21/03/2019 20:21

Google it. And never own a cat 😟

ILoveDaveGrohl · 21/03/2019 20:26

My mums cat is a greedy bastard and sniffs round your lap for food like a dog. He's been known to lick chilli sauce off a piece of meat for over an hour, tooing and froing until he gets his prize Grin

Expressedways · 21/03/2019 20:30

What a bizarre post!
As you’ve asked we used to have a chilli plant but had to get rid of it as the cats ate all the chillis. Didn’t do them any harm. But chocolate is toxic to cats so I wouldn’t reccomend that your DH prowls the streets looking for stray cats to share with.

cantfindname · 21/03/2019 20:31

Friends cat-sized dog had emergency vet visit and treatment after eating chocolate. Don't do it.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 21/03/2019 20:35

Our cat who I think may have been a Labrador in a previous life will lick the chilli bowl, don't feed them chocolate although an old cat of mine was rather partial to a bit of kit Kat

Bunnybigears · 21/03/2019 20:35

My cats love chilli, curry, garlic anything like that which they promptly throw up but they wouldn't touch chocolate.

wigglypiggly · 21/03/2019 20:35

Chocolate can cause seizures, heart failure, coma and death in cats not just upset tummies.

NearlyVegan · 21/03/2019 20:40

Mines love sirachi

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 21/03/2019 20:42

Don't know why I found this post so funny, think it's because the fact you don't have a cat and how random it is 😂 FWIW my cats will only sniff chocolate, never actually eat it. Unless it's in the form of ice cream, which is hilarious (type cats with brainfreeze into YouTube) also they don't die from a bite of chocolate, tad bit OTT Hmm we have plenty of scavenger strays that go through the bins and undoubtedly eat shit they shouldn't - those cats seem to live forever!

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 21/03/2019 20:43

My cat loves chilli heatwave Doritos. Weird! Obviously we don't give him loads, but just a little bit of one when we have them.

He won't touch chocolate though. Not that I'd share my chocolate with anyone.

Dramatical · 21/03/2019 20:57

Yes, it can. It doesn't always though, the usual result of a small amount of chocolate is an upset tummy. Extreme cases are where we see death.

JellySlice · 21/03/2019 22:41

I did have a cat when I was young (and a dog, guinea pig, mice, rats and hamsters at various times). She would sniff our food, but she rarely ate food that wasn't placed for her. Except the dog's food. Poor thing, he was 10 times her size, and afraid to disturb her while she ate Grin

Our animals were generally healthy, virtually never saw the vet apart from vaccinations, and we didn't know at that time that chocolate was poisonous - we just didn't give it to them as it was human junk food, so why would we?

I know the dog didn't like chilli - he licked it, then sneezed and walloped at his muzzle with his paws Grin

Our cat will eat anything and is a proper scavenger. He has tried to eat beef chilli out of the pan while it was cooking recently and also loves to try and steal your chocolate ice cream. He's never sick!

TheCrowFromBelow · 21/03/2019 22:51

Our cat used to steal our chicken curry, he’d “hunt” the tray.
The dog finished ourhome made aloo gobi last night and it was really hot. He loves cauliflower.

ScreamingValenta · 21/03/2019 22:53

My dear old cat who lived to 18 used to lick up the remains of a chicken vindaloo if he had the chance.

SpoonBlender · 21/03/2019 22:55

Mum's old cat was a massive curry eater, no qualms at all. And we ate curry proper hot.

Jasmineallenestate · 22/03/2019 03:39

One of my cats knocks curry and chilli powder pots down and sleeps and rolls in the powder. Actually, cats do have an attraction to certain spices. I used to work for Royal Canin and thr fussy cat food is coated with paprika because they are naturally attracted to the smell.

ChocomelandRinglings · 22/03/2019 06:24

My cat ate curry by choice. And fried eggs.
