How far in advance can you make sandwiches

Getting sick of rushing to make them for DC packed lunch in the morning.

If stored in an airtight container in the fridge, can I make enough for the week and they'll still taste OK or will they go dry and taste horrible?

Or even just 2 days worth so I only have to make them once every 2 days. But then sometimes I do make them the night before so they may end up becoming 3 day old sandwiches.

You can freeze them I think. Depends on the filling of course probably.

Hiphopopotamous · 21/03/2019 15:06

What do you put inside them?
Not sure I'd want to eat 2-3 day old sandwiches, sounds like it will be soggy or stale.

Hazlenutpie · 21/03/2019 15:10

I think that the night before is the best you can do.

How old are the DC? They could make their own from quite a young age.

TheCrowFromBelow · 21/03/2019 15:10

Shop bought sandwiches have a few days’ shelf life so yes I’d say as long as they were well wrapped and you avoid anything too soggy they’d be fine.

Stick a week's worth in the freezer and take out as you need them.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 21/03/2019 15:12

I always make them the night before and put them in the fridge.

I used to freeze a weeks worth of sandwiches and have a lunch station (tiered basket)
Had mini pretzels in top, raisins and choc biscuits in middle and fresh fruit in bottom, then in the morning I could just grab frozen sands, one from each basket- sands always defrosted by lunch time. Best fillings to freeze are grated cheese, good quality ham (not wafer thin or any high water content) Peanut butter or hummus and grated carrot.

It worked well for me

Freezing works well, op if it's just ham, cheese, marmite etc. Salad doesn't freeze well.

DreamingofSunshine · 21/03/2019 16:51

@crochetmonkey thanks for the filling inspiration, my DS loves hummus but hates veg so am going to try grated carrot with it!

Freeze a months worth at a time, individually wrapped. Take out, pop in lunchbox and they're ready by lunchtime - take out the night before if kids have an early lunch.

Some people make in advance and some freeze them.

Can't thing they'll be very nice though - and frozen they'll probably get a bit soggy!

For Dd we usually made them that morning, nice and fresh, or possible the evening before.

My own now - as close to eating them as I can. Freshly made sandwiches are so much nicer.

Thanks for all the answers. I had to collect from nursery, and then life just happened yesterday so couldn't thank or even read all of these properly then.

She usually has turkey or cheese sandwiches, not allowed peanut butter, and is 2 so although can sort of make sandwiches at home, they aren't really good enough for packed lunch yet.

I'd do other things like pasta etc that are easier to make in advance or use leftovers from dinner, but she barely touches her easier foods like sandwiches and carrot sticks at nursery so I don't think she'd eat it. She eats well at home, but not so well at nursery, probably because it's fun and she just wants to go and play.

Going to be adding grated carrot to sandwiches now though! Thanks!

I always did my DC lunchboxes the night before. No probs...

weekendsleep · 22/03/2019 21:14

Just make them the night before? Right before bed then it's done. Takes 5mins.
