If it can be done anywhere it's got to be MN or the world truly has gone to hell in a handcart.

I bought them because, well, they were 45p per tin and because they've got all that good oil n' shit and they were 45p per tin and it's good protein and they were cheap, and now I feel a bit of a tit because I tried them and they were...bleurgh.

How can I make the other 5 tins of them edible Grin.
I have cats but I'm not sure they'll go for them either tbh, if it's Tuna they're all over me but the sardines? Nope.

TIA

Grilled sardines on toast. Mmmm

Leeds2 · 20/03/2019 20:22

I didn't know this was a thing! Although have no issues with tuna in spring water.
I usually have sardines/pilchards in tomato sauce on toast.

On toast with olive oil and salt. Delicious.

Or sardine tart with shortcrust or puff pastry, pizza style tomato sauce, topped with sardines is lovely. Serve with green salad on the side.

Nacreous · 20/03/2019 20:24

I usually buy the ones in tomato sauce and have them on toast with cheese, grilled. I guess you could drain and add some kinda tomato puree thing?!

LIZS · 20/03/2019 20:24

Mash in salad cream and put on toast/in sandwich

dudsville · 20/03/2019 20:24

Maybe pate? I'm stretching here.

BikeTart · 20/03/2019 20:24

I didn't know it was either, usually i get Mackerel fillets in spring water which I love but they've been getting more expensive and then I saw these.

Oh My, there is hope! I like the idea of the tart and also making a tomato sauce topping for toast.

BikeTart · 20/03/2019 20:31

I used to do a pate type thing with sardines when I was doing slimming world. I think it was sardine in tomato sauce blitzed with quark. But I would use maybe full fat natural yoghurt and a good dollop of tomato puree and salt and pepper and maybe a bit of chilli.

Blitz it up, leave to chill in the fridge for an hour and have on toast or with crackers. I might also do a splodge of extra virgin olive oil in with it. Maybe.

Failing that I think you need some sweetness and something to break down the oil taste. So maybe in a salad with a sweet chilli sauce. Or with crackers but mixed with a nice, spicey tomatoy dip.

Or just take them back, say you bought the wrong thing and want to swap?

MitziK · 20/03/2019 20:43

Make a thick, spicy tomato sauce.

Or feed the cat with them. They're nowhere near as nice as Mackerel.

Herrings/Sild are nice, though.

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2019 20:43

Send them here my dog loves them.

FlibbertyGiblets · 20/03/2019 21:18

I'll bet they'd be gorgeous forked through some creme fraiche with a dab of horseradish.

deste · 20/03/2019 21:38

Well i buy these (Sainsburys) and I feed them to the dog with some veg and kibble. I just couldn’t eat them myself.

safariboot · 20/03/2019 22:04

I would throw them in a curry. No idea if it'd taste any good, but most things are at least acceptable when curried.

The thought of sardines with stuff like quark or creme fraiche, I can't imagine that tasting good.

Lumene · 20/03/2019 22:23

This recipe is delicious. From possibly the best cookbook I ever bought, called The Kitchen Revolution.

Heat some olive oil in a pan, cook some garlic and red chilies and lemon zest in it. Add the sardines and stir them around until they’re warm. Serve on toast, squeeze some lemon juice over and maybe some fresh chopped parsley.

Lumene · 20/03/2019 23:38

Sounds delicious why
