New Developments/House Prices

I’m currently renting and am concerned about losing my home as there is a new development surrounding us. I live in a terrace of a 8 townhouses and they’re over 100 years old. I have a very strong gut feeling that the developers will try and buy everyone out and knock them down to keep with the new look. If this doesn’t happen then I’ll still be worried about the house prices plumetting due to our nice back garden views being blocked by a giant eyesore of a supermarket that is within feet of the boundary. I now live literally at the back of a supermarket and the noise is horrendous. Not to mention the subsidence and cracking caused by the building work!

When I rented my home two years ago it was advertised as a quiet and secluded area, I didn’t sign up for this! I’m now getting woken by deliveries at 4am and I can’t enjoy my garden as all I can hear is the bustle of the supermarket car park. It was a Grade II listed building and they somehow managed to bribe the council to let them knock it down. I could not have foreseen such developments when choosing the property. Especially since the area in which it’s sited is a conservation area! I would usually welcome such a ‘great devolpment’ if there wasn’t already THE SAME SUPERMARKET ON THAT ROAD! And a major one round the corner. Sorry for the outburst, I need my morning coffee! I don’t like the 21st century can we go back pleaseGrin

It's lucky you're only renting. You'll have to move won't you? It will only get worse.

Luckily I’m only a year off my deposit for a house then I’m out! As long as nothing changes with this house in the meantime. I can’t imagine trying to relax in the summer when there’s a Lidl behind my garden wall. Might be outing but I want to emphasise how much of an eyesore it is. They’re hardly the prettiest supermaketsGrin

Oh, that's grim, sorry you've lost your peace, quiet and view. Handy for shopping though! Grin

Not sure why you're worried about the value of the house plummeting though when you're only renting it?

If it's a listed building, it's highly unlikely it will be demolished to make way for the new development, so you don't have to worry about being kicked out any time soon, and yes, be thankful you don't own so don't have to worry about loss in value or difficulty in selling.

Why would the developers want to ‘keep with the new look’?
They’ll be working out if they can make money from it. If you think about how much they’d have to buy the houses for and how much they’d spend on building new ones I don’t see how it would be profitable.

I imagine you’d hear if they start making enquiries. It won’t be a quick process.

But yes, if it’s noisy because of the supermarket then maybe it’s time to move.

I'd stay put and save save save. IMO if developers had wanted your row they'd have indicated that by now.
