Tips Re your montessori floor bed please

We are cosleeping and the bed is very high for a very wriggly toddler. The matress is at the end of its lifespan and i am going to turn it into a floorbed. Wanted to do this for DD1 over five years ago too but the floor was too cold in our previous flat. We also have a cot in the room as a secure place to play and lie.
Would love to hear :
-what if you use as a headboard, and how you attach it to the matress safely (if at all).
-what you do for bedside tables, toddler proof.
-toddler proof lamps. I will have to remove the glass lamps. Need light for bedtime stories.
-What you use on the floor beside the bed, eg a playmat , for when toddler rolls off.

Thanks
I hope we dont need to discuss the merits of a floor bed, because this is already decided. I also like the principle. Would appreciate your practical tips and experiences, also negative ones. I was on a previous thread about a floor bed for older children and there was a lot of “passionate discussion” Confused

Shelf above bed instead of bedside table, kitchen undercabinet lights beneath

I didn't know what a Montessori floor bed was but when I google them, most of them seem to have a headboard attached to the base like a normal bed, so I presume you could do that? I like the way some of them have built-in bed guards too - that seems useful with a wriggly toddler! There are some very lovely floor beds out there!

Re bedside lamps - is it possible to place it on a chest of drawers in such a way that it still gives enough light?

I didn’t add anything other than a mattress. Some softer cushions on the floor next to him if he did slide off. I used to read his bedtime stories in my bedroom anyway. So I didn’t worry about a bed side lamp. I literally stripped everything from the room that could harm him if he did get up. The room was bare for a while. But I put stuff in gradually.

Worked brilliantly. Glad I did it. And when I was at work ( Montessori nursery) other parents did it as well. And loved it.

Hello squiffany i never even thought of that but it is genius. Shelf has to be higher than headbumping height as i can see myself being clumsy. If only we had put wall sconces with in when we moved in, instead of wanting clean walls 🤦🏻‍♀️
Under-shelf spotlights super.

sweets yes a floor bed is an established ‘thing’. I admire the principle and think it will work well for us, especially as i am still breastfeeding. Also with DD1 i spent so much time helping her get on the bed and stopping her from falling off, eg when she wanted to play or read or drink on the bed. It would simplify my life a little.

Disclaimer: Clearly it wouldnt work for everyone.

We have no headboard or side tables or lamps for us. Like a previous poster we have quite a bare room! But we don't have a huge amount of money and haven't done since we moved in so it wasn't a conscious decision! Our room has a very very thick carpet so we didn't need anything for when she rolls out (which is often, she likes to sleep with top half on the bed and bottom half on the floor!) though we're moving her mattress into her room next week and I think I'll sort a rug out something out as it's a wooden floor in there. Still expecting her to join us by 3am most nights though.

My son did start to come in for a while into our bed. I just kept putting him back in his own bed. Consistently. Not once did I let him stay. In the end he stopped coming. Worked well.

What about this as a shelf combo with suspended cushions for headboard?
You can also get really long lasting LED battery lights

In what way is a Montessori Floor Bed not just a mattress on the floor?

For lighting, how about those Ikea kids lights that attach to the wall? The come in heart shaped, star and moon I think. Their kids' bedside lamps are good too, would cope with being knocked over and the on button glows in the dark.

Do you need a headboard?

crazycockerlady · 20/03/2019 14:04

If you only ever have a floor bed how does your child learn not to fall out of bed if they ever sleep in a normal one?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/03/2019 14:22

I am not sure what a "Montessori floor bed" is but we just sleep on a king size mattress on the floor. It's fine with no headboard. We did it because we couldn't afford a bed when we first moved in but now are used to it and I like sleeping so low down.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/03/2019 14:29

I wasn't aiming for a Montessori floor bed, but I did co-sleep happily with my dc on a futon on the floor until they were around 14 months.

AmIBU123 · 20/03/2019 15:06

No headboard.
A night light that attaches to the wall.
Our flooring is carpeted and therefore doesn't require extra padding but if I had a hard floor I'd probably lay out some large cushions beside the bed at night time.

SarahAndQuack · 20/03/2019 15:35

I'm also not sure what a floor bed is, but we found that putting DD in a low bed (it's maybe 8 inches off the floor, max) worked. It's so close to the floor that when on the odd occasion she did roll off, she didn't hurt herself and usually carried right on sleeping! We had a little quilt I made as a floor mat, but it's not hugely shock-absorbing, and it was fine. When we put her in it she was 12 months, and it's only in the last couple of months (22-24) that she's been able to climb into our bed without waking us, but it's really easy to wake up and scoop her in if she comes to find us, and means we don't have to have a mattress on the floor.

Just mentioning in case it is a useful compromise (I am struggling to visualise how the low bed works and what you're trying to get out of it, so may be off topic).

Harebellsies · 20/03/2019 22:00

sweets you were not rude at all. Hope i didnt sound brisk, breastfeeding and typing so keep having to correct.

squiffany really useful pic. It seems actuall to be a coat rack, with non-sticky-outey Wink hooks and the suspended cushion is brilliant. I want one. Its ingenious.

Thanks everyone else also. Will be re-reading several times.

sarah have been looking for a low futon bed but ikea dont seem to have any and the budget is low currently which is also fine. Your idea combines the best of both styles.

Another thread I was on suggested those pool noodle things to put on the side of the mattress to help prevent them rolling out or wedging themselves between mattress and wall.

If anyone is still looking, I can recommend a brand that I am very pleased with. This is not a collaboration, I am writing because I am really satisfied. I want to reward the good because I bought a very high quality bed. My child and I are very happy and I wanted to write this.
