World (not very) wide web

Despite have the vast internet at my fingertips, my evenings are spent flitting from BBC news, to Twitter, to mumsnet. And repeat, repeat, repeat...it's like the digital equivalent of a caged lion pacing a 10 metre path all day.

I recently deleted Facebook but that figured heavily in my online visits.

Does anyone else have such a limited range of online viewing?!

Help me broaden my horizons!

Here's an entertaining internet wormhole for you...

notalwaysright.com/

lljkk · 19/03/2019 22:34

youtube? reddit, special interest sites. What do you do for fun in Real World?

elephantoverthehill · 19/03/2019 22:35

No sorry I do about the same. I do use Facebook and do online marking of students' work and look at the local freebie site. I'm waiting with interest.

BedraggledBlitz · 19/03/2019 22:41

Oh I've remembered more sites I visit. I go through Ebay phases. Mainly to look at nostalgic stuff I used to own.

Rightmove to spy on houses near me and also posh houses I could never own.

Yes Facebook, Mumsnet, BBC News, Wales Online (the shittiest most lacking in news news site ever), Daily Mail Blush.

OnlineAlienator · 19/03/2019 22:48

Yup. I enjoyed the invention of the internet and lapped it up, but ive seen it all now and basically just look at news and mumsnet. Check email, watch a series maybe.

HelmutFrontbut · 19/03/2019 22:49

Have you not considered building your hips and glutes? I get strangely obsessed with these videos:

BedraggledBlitz · 19/03/2019 22:51

NHS website to rule out major illnesses (alternate with mumsnet for true life reassurance/confirmation)

OP posts:
BedraggledBlitz · 19/03/2019 22:54

My hips and glutes are pretty significant already, not sure I want to build them.

I'd like to be good at make up but when I seek out tutorials it all seems a bit Ru Paul.

I recommend Reddit. It's got independently-moderated sub forums covering practically any topic you can think of. Here are some examples:

  1. r/wholesomememes for heartwarming things people have found on social media and out in the world
  2. r/OldSchoolCool for user-uploaded vintage photos that are at least 25 years old
  3. r/explainlikeimfive for layman explanations on whatever question you can think of
  4. r/science for, you've guessed it, news and discoveries in the scientific community
  5. r/AmITheAsshole which is basically AIBU
  6. r/AskHistorians for all your history-related curiosities
TipseyTorvey · 20/03/2019 06:15

Another vote for reddit here. I also secretly sneak a peak at r/child free which is a sub dedicated to people that are never having kids showing off about how restful their weeknds are and how much money they have 😂

BedraggledBlitz · 20/03/2019 12:33

Update: I am enjoyimg reddit thank you

paisho · 20/03/2019 12:58

@BedraggledBlitz I'm not sure what you're interested in, but if give me an inkling of the type of things you like, I might be able to recommend some relevant subreddits!

paisho · 20/03/2019 13:01

Oh, saw you mentioned makeup up there - r/MakeupAddiction and r/SkincareAddiction are great!

BedraggledBlitz · 20/03/2019 15:58

Thanks @paisho - true crime, unsolved mysteries, real life fashion for normals, ask me anything (found this already), nosey parker house snooping, social history from ww1 onwards, cute animals, snoopy, local gossip. Grin

OP posts:
paisho · 20/03/2019 16:42

@BedraggledBlitz ooh that I can work with!

I'd recommend:

  1. r/UnsolvedMysteries - ultimate true crime sub
  2. r/femalefashionadvice
  3. r/CozyPlaces
  4. r/RoomPorn - don't worry it's not actually porn it's just pictures of pretty rooms
  5. r/rarepuppers - insanely adorable dogs
  6. r/NatureIsFuckingLit - amazing animal kingdom stuff
  7. r/AskHistorians - you can filter by region/topic/period and they've got weekly mega-discussions on various things (realised I've already mentioned this upthread but oh well)
  8. r/TalesFromRetail - strange customers, awkward encounters, coupon cutting
  9. r/talesfromtechsupport - same but with folks working in tech support
10. r/CasualUK 11. r/britishproblems - great for when you've got cold tea and soggy biscuits 12. r/aww - the generic sub for cute animals and stuff 13. r/HumansBeingBros - when you need a little bit of extra faith in humanity 14. r/AnimalsBeingBros - same but with animals 15. r/ThriftStoreHauls 16. r/LetsNotMeet - stories of people's creepy encounters

Better stop here before this list gets too long. Grin

paisho · 20/03/2019 16:49

A little tip: for some of the major, long-standing subs (especially the text-heavy ones like r/WritingPrompts or r/AskReddit), sort by top > of all time and you've got hours of reading material!

BedraggledBlitz · 20/03/2019 18:15

Wow thanks so much!

Does anybody else find the Reddit layout really difficult and clunky? I think it's something I'd like but the layout looks horrible.

Buzzfeed is my go-to site. But I end up clicking on things like "10 things you'll find hilarious if you're Australian" and I am not Australian.

paisho · 20/03/2019 18:31

Does anybody find the Reddit layout difficult and clunky.

It's down to personally preference and what you're used to, really. Saying that though, the new layout in "card" format looks a lot like Facebook so that's a plus/minus depending.

claybakefan · 20/03/2019 18:42

Does anybody find the Reddit layout difficult and clunky.

Yes, I do. I also wish I knew how to have the page always load with the oldest post.

As for a new website for the OP - Lamebook.com Grin It's a real laugh-out-loud one for me.

Tofslan · 20/03/2019 18:43

Haha - I’m exactly the same, with the exception of trying very hard to avoid Twitter. Mumsnet, bbc news, bbc weather to see if I should get the washing in, nhs to check on latest worrying symptom, and occasional phases of eBay/gumtree obsessive yet always fruitless searching and rightmove daydreaming.

Used to have a much wider repertoire when I worked* in an office, rather than trying to squeeze in 10mins of clandestine smartphoning whilst herding children

*for ‘worked’ read ‘procrastinated, chain-drunk milky coffee and slowly died of boredom’

TipseyTorvey · 20/03/2019 18:51

Reddit doesn't really work on pc I find. I can only deal with it on my phone. I'm far too invested but there are some really clever informative people on there!

lucysmam · 20/03/2019 19:03

OP you missed Pinterest off your list! I waste hours flicking between fb/MN/Pinterest/read & delete the odd email as I get them & repeat Hmm

Oh and ebay. Sometimes add to my Tesco shop.

Not very exciting.

I did go through a phase of reddit - someone here linked The Left Right Game (or something like that) and I was hooked for a day or two until it ended. Also like to visit r/AsianBeauty for a mooch every now and again.

paisho · 20/03/2019 20:14

Definitely a classic!
