It isn't just the salary. Its the flexibility.

A £50k job you can do from anywhere (so you can minimise how much you have to spend on mortgage/rent/transport/outgoings) will give you more disposable income than an £80k job that ties you to commuting to London 5 days a week.

£80k (£4k take home each month) suddenly doesn't feel like much when your combined mortgage and nursery fees are £3500.

Marketing and Business Development roles in big corporates, and boutique professional services firms, pay well and you get bonuses too. B2B marketing isn't nearly as fun and glamorous as consumer brands etc., but it pays a lot better. They tend to be in-house rather than in an agency (a definite plus in my book!) and you work directly with over-achieving fee-earners which can be a highly stimulating environment. Industry qualifications (like CIM) really help career progression.

The wealthiest/ richest people I know ( counting their assets as opposed to just salary ) are farmers, developers , a bloke who owns car repair businesses and a scrap merchant who has his own helicopter. The car repair bloke is probably the wealthiest and he left school at 15 and became a mechanic .
If you want a good salary you work for someone else , to really achieve wealth you need to work for yourself or make your money work for you .

Purpletigers · 20/03/2019 10:43

Orthodontists make a lot too especially with their own practice.

ANiceLuxury · 20/03/2019 10:47

24 hour emergency trades people are well paid.

However its a very restricting job and you need to be available at very inconvenient times.

SwoopTheJackpot · 20/03/2019 10:51

With great money comes great responsibility, long hours and high indemnity insurance. Grin

DH has his own consultancy and earns a high salary. His day rate is more than I earn in a month of teaching.

However, with that high salary comes never-ending "I just need to take this call" moments in the middle of the Aegean Sea on a holiday where we agreed there would be no work, no calls, no emails etc. He cannot switch off ever. And he will never change.

TBF I think I could cope with that. 😁

NorthEndGal · 20/03/2019 10:58

A local college is hiring a new president here, starting salary at $230,000.00

HarrySnotter Ha, true! I think you have two choices in a situation like that; you fight against it and hope that the person changes or you accept it as part of who they are and shrug and take the DC snorkelling. I'm laid-back and don't tend to let his work obsession interfere. His work friends wives/partners can struggle and my advice has always been that they need to carve out their own identity and life away from that other person, so that they're never sat there waiting for their partner to pay them attention. It's always worked for us and means that there's less resentment on my part and less guilt on his.

Kilash · 20/03/2019 11:05

Plumbers do pretty well - I know 2 who average 80-100K per year. I'm retraining (in my next life, too old now!)

Bearberry · 20/03/2019 11:09

I used to work in wealth management and other than the old money lot, people who I saw who had the most income were footballers, hedge fund managers, law firm partners and dentists!

HolyForkingShirt · 20/03/2019 11:52

Statistics/data science

LadySybilPussPolham · 20/03/2019 12:03

MLM hun. Embrace your dreams and earn your true worth Wink

BMW6 · 20/03/2019 14:03

OP you rather sound as if you think a career in Finance would be easy peasy.......
in all these suggested careers don't forget that you would need to be really really good at it to earn top dollar........

NewYoiker · 20/03/2019 14:14

Nursing definitely... Grin

ritzbiscuits · 20/03/2019 14:16

Jobs in technology - definitely software developers, their aren't enough of them and you can get really good day rate contracts. It's lucrative if you brain is inclined that way.

I work in tech but customer facing side of digital products. These are well paid jobs too, everything in the world is going digital and there is a massive skills shortage of people available to do this type of work.

jay55 · 20/03/2019 14:52

Ones that men value.

MeAgainAgain · 20/03/2019 16:47

Jay55 too true

Coffeebean76 · 20/03/2019 23:32

Tech and Sales if you have an aptitude for it. In sales you can earn a decent basic and double it on commissions. It's not for everyone though.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 20/03/2019 23:52

Tbh I think finance is probably going to be the easiest route to go down in term of pay and hours etc

Pay yes.
Hours no.

accendo · 20/03/2019 23:55

Air traffic controller.

happyhillock · 21/03/2019 00:07

A politician, job comes with a great expense account..

CantYouSleepLittleBear · 21/03/2019 00:17

OP there are lots of roles that you can do in the financial services world that don't involve even the tiniest smidgen of finance. Many different roles in a bank. A close friend recently doubled their salary by moving into financial services (in a back-office role). Same role as before, better hours, and double the income. So it's worth thinking laterally.

LinoleumBlownapart · 21/03/2019 00:24

Graduate engineers are well paid, technicians who are often also called "engineers" are not so well paid. I know an Aeronautical engineer and a telecommunications/radio frequency engineer, both well paid. One averages about £12,000 p/m
