Ok, NC for this as it's a little concerning but I dont want it to affect my usual account.

So. Im 35, my DH is 39. We have decided to start seriously ttc this summer. First for both of us.

I say "seriously" because it will be the first time we finish "properly". I should clarify. We have been together for eight years, married for five. Apart from the first few months we were together, we havent used any real contraception of any sort. Ever. Just the good old withdrawal method Confused

So. My question is this.

Considering that in almost eight years we havent used anything, and in that time we have never even had a "scare". Do you think we need to actually get tested for fertility issues?

Have any of you used the withdrawal method for such a long time without any problems?

Is it really that reliable or have we been ignoring a huge potential problem?

Sorry for posting here. If I need to move it to ttc threads then go ahead mumsnet. Juat thought I would get quicker responses on here.

Sex life has been perfectly fine, never gone any more than four of five days without dtd.

Do you think we may have fertility issues?

Thanks.

I used the withdrawal method for 18 months without a scare. I then went on the pill and fell pregnant straight away. For some couples, if the man doesn't tend to have pre ejaculate and the timing is swift, it does just work.
But if you can get a fertility MOT then go for it for the peace of mind.

Following with interest, as I'm in a very similar position at the moment.

We used it for five years with no pregnancies. When we actively TTC, I got pregnant on the second cycle.

Thanks. Still though, almost eight years Confused

Anybody else?

This has me a bit worried now. Can we get fertility tests on the NHS or do we have to do it privately? Anybody know the set up or costs?

No you won't get tests on the NHS unless you try for 2 years and don't get pregnant.

Private tests will cost around £500 for you and £200 for him. The ones for you won't be that great though. Any private fertility clinic will do them

However ... just try TTC first? You're worrying too much about something that isn't a problem yet Smile
