Is Wix still inferior to WordPress if SEO is not that important to you?

I'm a freelancer and am currently trying to get my first website up and running. I hired a company to do this for me but despite good reviews I'm not massively impressed and considering going it alone. The company will make me a WordPress website if I stick with them and if I go it alone I will probably use Wix as I've been playing around with it and getting good results.

So I have a few questions:

Firstly, will I be massively worse off with Wix. SEO isn't massively important to me in my industry as no individual freelancer gets anywhere near the first 5 pages of google. It's all the big companies and agencies. So the site will be more like an online business card to sell my services. Will I miss out on anything else by going with Wix?

Secondly, if I create a Wix site, will it be possible to transfer it to WordPress somewhere down the line without any of the visuals changing? And roughly how much will it cost me to do this?

TIA

Nobody? Can anyone recommend where I can post to get an answer on this? I've tried Reddit but I have to have some unspecified amount of interaction with the site as a whole before I'm allowed to post a question and it's so hard as I can't find things I have anything I can add anything about.

Wix is a decent alternative to Wordpress IMO. The Wix editor is becoming much more intuitive and you can create really quite effective websites therein.

However if you plan to be on Wordpress at any point, I would simply start there. Of course with the added benefit that Wordpress is free, whereas Wix costs a monthly fee.

How flexible is Wix in terms of plugins? One of the nice thhings about wordpress is the sheer quantity of plugins to expand your site - contact forms, on,ine shopping if that's relevant, FAQs sections and all sorts. Think about the future here - is a Wix site going to last?

In terms of appearance - wordpress basically requires a theme - this is a set of templates that incorporate the baseline wordpress code and then dictate how the content is displayed, basically. I haven't worked with wix but I do work with wordpress and I suspect transferring sites would be a fairly time consuming task as it won't be a simple matter of dropping one template onto the other site, you will have to rejig them all to work with wordpress. It will be possible but a pain, and certainly one that I'd avoid. Much easier to go for a redesign and start from scratch, to be honest,, rather than try to replicate from another platform.

It's about finding out what meets your needs, but I'd echo the advice about not going into this planning on moving sites. Think longterm, it will save trouble in the end. There are plenty of wordpress devs out there so if that's the platform you want, change the dev over the platform.

To be fair, Wix does all those things, from the POV of a couple of my clients, Wix commerce is currently knocking Wordpress e-commerce into a cocked hat Grin

What I like about Wix, is that all their plugins are automatically configured to work, they’re also great for editing a site for a device.

That said, I wouldn’t start a site from scratch on Wix, I’m just enjoying maintaining some for novelty value Smile

I haven't tried it to be fair, I really must have a poke out of interest! Smile

Thanks for all replies so far! I don't anticipate my website or my business changing much in form. Just the content probably. And I really only want several columns of text under my logo and company name. So I would hope that wouldn't be too hard to transfer but ultimately have no idea.

I was also wondering if the analytics side of things is the same quality with each?

The easiest way would be to find the closest theme and simply copy and paste.

But there are several free themes on WordPress which will give the layout you describe with ease

Spudlet · 18/03/2019 18:10

Google analytics should work fine with either, as far as I can see. It says it does on wix and I know it does on wordpress.

So what would the value be of having a WordPress site over a Wix site?

I know someone who started off with a wix site then switched to a wordpress one- the main thing I like is that it does doesn't say created with wix on every page!!

flourpower82 · 18/03/2019 20:24

Was that because she didn't pay to have the ad-free version orangecake or do you get it whatever you do? I can preview my site pre-finishing and it doesn't say that but I don't want it to appear when I've signed up and paid.

What kind of work do you do? If it’s more visual there are some great portfolio sites.

Orangecake123 · 18/03/2019 21:56

I don't he did pay. If they offer an add free version I think it would be 100% free of ads.

flourpower82 · 19/03/2019 00:25

I actually want something really minimalist with no pictures - mostly just text with my logo. Do you mean the wix message wouldn't be there if I paid orangecake?

I find Weebly easier to use than Wix. Never tried WordPress.

HereBeFuckery · 19/03/2019 05:24

Wix and WP are just platforms - unless you pay for SEO boosting they should be the same. Paid SEO is platform agnostic.

WP might be free, but you are a) responsible for security updates and b) reliant on plugin creators for the plugin to remain available and stable. If you're not techy, you might want to consider paying to keep your site updated and secure.

If you like Wix, and can index your site with Google Search Console, stick with it.

flourpower82 · 19/03/2019 14:37

Thank you HereBeFuckery! I think I will commit to Wix.
