Does anyone know anything about Welmar pianos?

There is one for sale - can’t remember if made in the 1970s or 1980s.

£3000 - the man in the shop told me they are very good handcrafted pianos with a good sound, and it did have a nice sound.

Seems like a big decision though, and I feel that I should ask for advice. In my price bracket (2 to 4K max) it was one of the nicer sounding pianos in the shop. (I also tried the 125K Bösendorfer which made such a beautiful singing sound).

I would pay in instalments over 18 months.

I had a Welmar upright - similar age and paid a fraction less 12 or so years ago. It was a great sounding piano, I loved it and wouldn’t hesitate recommending one.

I traded it in a couple of years ago to a Bechstein grand - and I actually think the Welmar has a much better tone. The reason I swapped - and it will depend where you’re up to - it got to the stage where I was finding the action slightly too heavy. But that only happened after 10 years playing and getting to post grade 8 stage.

It’ll be a fantastic starter instrument and if you’re buying from a reputable dealer I don’t think you can go wrong! Buying a rubbish sounding cheaper instrument will just put you off playing.

Good luck!

Thanks so much.

I am about Grade 5 / Grade 6 (playing wise, have not sat exams and my knowledge of theory is pretty non existent) and my daughter, who has had lessons but who now teaches herself pieces, is probably Grade 3 / 4, so I think the Welmar would be great for us.

After having an upright Rippen while I was growing up, I have had an electronic Roland for the past almost 23 years, so if we go ahead it will be a lovely and really exciting treat which will make all the difference.

The Roland is good but still nothing like a real piano.

Apparently the Welmar used to belong to P J Harvey so I suppose that’s endorsement (though I had to go home and google who P J Harvey is Blush).
