Does your child's sleep pattern correlate with the time of their birth?

I've just read in a novel that it's an old wives' tale that whether you're a night owl or morning lark is determined by the time of day you are born.

Obviously it's a load of nonsense.

Or is it?!

I present my utterly compelling evidence:

DS1, born 01.17, stays up for hours each evening and was a pain to get to sleep right from birth.

DS2, born 20.15 also dreadful sleeper as a baby, but doesn't stay up as late as his brother now.

I was born in the morning and I'm definitely a morning person...
..

The plot thickens.

Utter bollocks. DD was extracted with force at 6:30am. She’s absolutely a night owl and has only seen 6:30am since if we’ve been catching a flight.

StickyShoess · 16/03/2019 21:29

DS1 - born early afternoon, never ever fucking slept
DD1 - born late afternoon, slept like a dream, had to be woke in the mornings after full nights sleeps at a few months old and taking herself off to bed when tired at about 12 months old
DS2 - born late at night, never ever fucking slept (still doesn’t!)
DD2 - born early afternoon, sleeps like a dream, sleeping 9-7 at a few weeks old and self settling with zero training and completely by herself by about 7 months

Now I’m no scientist but I’m gonna go ahead and say it’s bollocks? 🤔

BellaBearisWideAwake · 16/03/2019 21:30

Hmmm. So much for old wives tales.

Bollocks, DS was born at 9pm. He’s now 10 and has only ever slept past 6am once!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 16/03/2019 21:33

Well, this novel has completely broken my trust now.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 16/03/2019 21:33

Absolute rubbish.
I was born minutes before midnight and have always slept well and been a morning person and ds was born prematurely at 7pm and has always slept well too. He is naturally tired at 7pm so that is his be time and has been since 5 months old

VioletCharlotte · 16/03/2019 21:33

Not true for my two. DS1 (19) was born at 11.47 am and is a total night owl. DS2 was born at 11.43am and is more of a morning person. However, DS1 was nocturnal as a baby and has always been much more of a night person.

Cuddlysnowleopard · 16/03/2019 21:37

DS1 was born late afternoon, and was always very unsettled at that time, for years...

DS2 was born at 1.45am, and woke at that time and would not settle again until 6am for years (now, that was hard!).

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 21:38

Dc1 born 7pm. Night Owl
Dc2 born 3pm. Night Owl ( although not as late as dc1.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 16/03/2019 21:39

Aha! Data that fits my hypothesis. I shall ignore everyone else. Grin

Well ds was born at 0503 and that tends to be his wake up time

BillywigSting · 16/03/2019 21:39

Nah total bollocks.

I was born early evening and am a total night owl. Ds was born at 3am and is a total lark. Dp mid afternoon and a lark, my mum mid morning and a night owl.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern whatsoever

TiredTodayZzzz · 16/03/2019 21:50

01:07 and 19:06. Both early sleepers.

On my daughter's first birthday I woke up during the night checked my phone and the time was 01:07 Shock off topic but I just like to drop it into conversation now and againGrin

BikeRunSki · 16/03/2019 21:53

DS was born at 6.30am, but is a total night owl. I was born at 3.30 pm and so am I. DD was born at 11.45pm and could happily fall asleep at 7pm even still (she is 7 and a half).

I don't think there is anything in it.

Crunchymum · 16/03/2019 21:53

My only morning born (6.45am) child is a complete night owl.

Other 2 (both close to 1am) are early to bed and early to rise.

Crunchymum · 16/03/2019 21:54

Other 2 aren't twins by the way. DC1 was 12:56am and DC3 was 01:18am. Separated by 5 years.

Meet0nTheledge · 16/03/2019 21:56

Mine (teenagers) were both born late in the morning.

The oldest gets up the moment they wake and is up before 7 every day. Goes to bed voluntarily by 10.

The other has to be dragged out of bed for school, routinely sleeps till 9 at weekends and often stays in bed longer but will happily stay up past 11 at night.

I say its bollocks.

SmarmyMrMime · 16/03/2019 21:59

Mine were born 11:59 apart from each other. Both night owls whether born at lunch time or in the small hours. Mind you, the lunch time baby had been dragging it out after a long all nighter, so maybe that's a factor rather than the time of extraction Grin

BellaBearisWideAwake · 16/03/2019 21:59

Oh these bloody old wives. What do they know?

OP posts:
Windingstreams · 16/03/2019 22:14

Mine was born at midnight. She sleeps like a dream from 7:30 -7:30 every night

Fatted · 16/03/2019 22:19

One of mine was born in the early morning after an all night labour. The other was born around midday. Both took to sleeping through from early on as babies.

What I will say is that in both pregnancies, I was never aware of them being active at night. Most nights I was asleep by 10pm anyway! They were always more active during the day. So they just kind of kept that routine I think.

Dothehappydance · 16/03/2019 22:23

I am maintaining that the time my children were born determined their sleep pattern from the start. DD1 born 4pm and therefore into a normal sleep time from day 1 was a dream sleeper.

Ds born at 1am and dd2 born at 4am were both shocking, as their body clock from the out was set wrong.

This is my theory, I have tested it and it is 100% correct based on n3 and I am sticking to that as it brings comfort when I recall those dreadful, dreadful nights.

Freaking0ut · 16/03/2019 22:27

I’m sure it is all bollocks but I have recently come up with a theory of my own (also probably total bollocks it would be interested to know others experiences). My theory is that the time of year born can impact the type of sleeper they are. Example:

My son born in April has always been a very early riser. I wonder whether it’s because he was a tiny baby through very light summer months so his body clock has been conditioned to wake early with the light.

My daughter born in September has been a much longer sleeper, will often sleep past 7 and is in no rush to get up. Her early baby days were through the dark winter.

I wonder 🤔

HerRoyalFattyness · 16/03/2019 22:29

DS1 was born at 5 past 6 at night. He didn't sleep through the night until he was 4 the little shit
DD was born at 10.28 am and has slept through from birth, and hates getting up in the mornings! She really really loves her sleep!
DS2 was born at 11.30 am and is a fairly average sleeper i think. Hes 3 now and sleeps 7.30-7.00 ish.

I was born at 2 minutes to 9 at night. Im 27 and still don't sleep well!

Horsemad · 16/03/2019 22:32

My afternoon born baby likes plenty of sleep and is an early bird; my evening born baby is a night owl. 🙂

I once heard that the time of conception correlated to birth time. True in both of my DC's cases 😊
