Best travel sickness remedies

4yo gets travel sick very easily and on everything (apart from the Underground)

Due to travel abroad so it will involve taxi [one on the worst offenders!] Plane and car.

What works best?

I get travel sick, and travel sickness pills are really the only thing that is guaranteed to work for me.

Other things that work fairly well:

Listening to music through headphones

Sipping Coca Cola (not ideal for a 4yo!)

Travel sickness bands

Eating / drinking something ginger flavoured

Chewing gum (we actually let 4yo DD2 chew gum during airplane take off and she was surprisingly okay)

SummerHouse · 16/03/2019 19:09

Ginger. Definitely.

SummerHouse · 16/03/2019 19:10

Oh and no reading, iPads, phones, drawing or anything like that.

Crunchymum · 16/03/2019 19:12

Thank you.

Will get a multipack of mini gingerbread men for travel.

Was going to get the bands as well.

Any particular travel sickness pills or will any work. We haven't travelled an hour + for a while now!!

GP prescribed sturgeon for DD when she was 4. It’s only available OTC for 5plus
It makes her a bit drowsy, but it’s definitely better than the alternative 🙈

Millie2013 · 16/03/2019 19:17

Prior to that, we used Piriton successfully

wittyusermane · 16/03/2019 19:19

I would get some anti emetics prescribed by the GP if the travel sickness was likely to be severe and prolonged. Poor thing, and poor you too!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/03/2019 19:20

I find promethazine the best medication as an a adult. But I take 25mg tablets. The BNF says she would need 5mg which may only be available on prescription.

Phernegan is amazing. Can make them tired, but doesn’t for mine. You can get it over the counter from a pharmacy but for that age you’ll need the liquid and you might have to get the pharmacist to order it in.

Crunchymum · 16/03/2019 19:33

God, is Phenergan still about? Remember having it 30+ years ago.

Piriton doesn't work on this child.... Will grab some sturgeon.... and will tell them it's for my 6yo.

I'm an emetophobe. Yep I know. Didn't think this children malarkey through!!

Kwells junior work well for my 6 year old. Also distraction, distraction, distraction. We're excellent at counting green cars etc Grin

jellybeanteaparty · 16/03/2019 20:25

Another vote for ginger. Packets of ginger nuts to nibble on worked well for us.

bobstersmum · 16/03/2019 20:33

Kwells are great. My 5+6 have them when we go on a long drive. To be taken at least 30 mins before setting off, they are effective for 6 hrs I think. We have also used some called joy rides. Just the same. Wouldn't be without them!
