There's a travel lodge near Picadilly. It's central so near the northern quarter which is popular with students with loads of bars and restaurants, also near canal street with loads of bars and Chinatown.

pink412 · 16/03/2019 16:28

Around the Northern Quarter and China Town both great areas. But there is a Premier Inn just outside Piccadilly (as long as you go out the right door and not do what we did and walked the long way round)

I was thinking the Deansgate one butt it looks quite far away. I really wanted to stay where we wont have to walk far to see the nightlife when we first went to visit the uni we just seemed to walk for miles with just building sites to look at. Its along time since I stayed in Manchester. I miss those Hacienda days.

I was there recently and the amount of new building work from10 month ago shocked me. Deansgate will be okay. There will be cabs and buses going to the uni and hospitals (both on the same streets Oxford Road uni are first then the hospitals)

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 16/03/2019 18:52

Deansgate Locks is great for parking, travel routes and the nightlife of castlefield and Deansgate locks. Short walk/taxi to Deansgate and Peters St.

Wendywoo1000 · 16/03/2019 19:40

Ive stayed many times in Deansgate. Great hotel, 10 mins walk to the shops, tram up the road too.

FredaFox · 16/03/2019 23:55

She's 18 so would probably like deansgate/ deansgate locks. Personally I find it chavvy and rough at the locks.
I'd suggest staying at the Dale street one near Piccadilly and drink in the northern quarter.

Ahh, I remember that first trip to Manchester to see the uni, I’ve now been here 20 years!

The Northern Quarter is the trendiest part of town and I’m imagine where she’d be most interested in looking around. Lots of bars/restaurants but also independent shops too. Look up Thomas St, it’s all the streets around there.

So agree with the above, there is a Travelodge (Manchester Ancoats) or Motel One near Piccadilly which is a good spot to stay too. Please note, Piccadilly Gardens are really rough, but don’t let that put you off! Ooh, you might find a suitable hotel on Shudehill too, which is close by.

Deansgate is completely the other end of the city and there are a lot of bars/restaurants down by the locks (agree chavvy) and Spinningfields (where all the banks/law firms/management consultancies are). I sometimes eat down there, but it’s not really a place for young students.

Have a great time.

I’d go for the premier inn on Portland street - it’s at the top of oxford road and you can just get a bus/cab down to the uni, or walk - it’s about 20 mins. Manchester is a small enough city that you can walk to any area easily if you’re staying centrally.

Im really confused now. My sister is coming and we were just talking about our Hacienda days when i was a student. My sister hasnt been out for a very long tine and my niece is the first of her six to go to uni. Shes coming and we both said it would be good to go for a nice drink, msybe a cocktail or two as its pay day. Maybe sonewhere with sone proper Indie 80’s music if there is such a place. It all has to be within walking distance to the hotel so it looks like its ny chance, if that makes sense. If we have to start getting dressed up and catching cabs it wont happen. Any ideas?

The city centre is very walkable, so wherever you choose you can easily get round. If you want a bit of quiet late at night go for the Premier Inn near Manchester Arena and Victoria station.

EachandEveryone · 24/03/2019 16:52

Ive booked Portland Street as it was getting more expensive, i dont know the area really.

Portland street is fine. About a 10 minute walk to the Northern Quarter, 5 minutes to the Gay Village and 10 minutes to Deansgate Locks.

"It all has to be within walking distance to the hotel so it looks like it's by chance, if that makes sense. If we have to start getting dressed up and catching cabs it wont happen."

What does this mean?

iklboo · 24/03/2019 18:07

Fab Cafe in Portland Street is a good indie type bar. Had some great nights out there I was younger.

Dirty Martini on Deansgate is good for cocktails. Atlas Bar for gins.

granadagirl · 24/03/2019 19:33

Portland st is a good choice, very central.
Deansgate literally 10 mins walk, northern quarter 10 mins.
You could always get taxi from hotel to either for about £5, Uber tells you the costs before you order it. Don’t forget it may be raining!

To get to uni it’s 2 min walk to bus stop on princess st. Any of the 40’s number buses will drop you off outside uni. 10 mins MAX

EachandEveryone · 24/03/2019 20:16

Brilliant! Wheres good to eat?

OP posts:
granadagirl · 24/03/2019 23:37

If you like Chinese
Your on the doorstep off china town
There’s Rossi bar/restaurant owned by Rio Ferdinand ex footballer) they do cocktails too 7 mins walk at st Anne’s Sq, also few more around there. King st leading into Deansgate.

Ouch44 · 24/03/2019 23:55

If you are on Instagram follow @tasteitmcr and @mcr.foodie.

I've got Zouk Tea bar and Mowgli (Oxford rd) on my list of places I want to eat. So many great places though you will be spoilt for choice. Love Rudys pizza nr St Peters Square too.

EachandEveryone · 25/03/2019 20:12

Someone mentioned a Cuban place?

OP posts:
iklboo · 25/03/2019 20:21

Revolución De Cuba? Good deals on cocktails and the food is nice. It's on Peter Street, not far from Deansgate.

Soontobe60 · 25/03/2019 21:23

You ,hint need to book for Revolution de Cuba.
Agree Rudys either on Peter Street or in Ancoats both similar distances from your hotel. If you want quirky, reasonable prices, mixed ages, stay in Northern Quarter. You're ok in jeans, or equally in more dressy stuff. Deansgate locks quite glam, Spinningfields very poserish and expensive. All designer handbags and lip fillers 🤣🤣

EachandEveryone · 27/03/2019 09:46

Im just getting ready its quite exciting.
