Help with fussy eating

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 16/03/2019 10:03

I need some inspiration please for dd6.
She seems to be getting worse as she gets older!
I would like some meals / snacks that you think she may like? She’s not in to meat but do still serve it and she will generally try anything.

Foods she eats without fuss -

Homemade chicken noodle soup
Pesto pasta
Spaghetti carbonara
Pasta with stir in sauce
Plain rice
Plain pasta
Quorn nuggets
Sweet corn
Carrots
Broccoli

Foods she will eat with me constantly telling her to eat up-

Spaghetti bolognaise
Veg soup
Roast chicken
Mashed pot
Butternut squash soup

Please has any one got any ideas / new recipes I could try based on this? We don’t eat eggs.
Baby and dh are not at all fussy

Homemade pizza...Jamie Oliver has a good dough recipe. We load ours with seasonal veg and cheese.

Homemade chicken "nuggets" cooked in the oven.

Falafel

Baked potato with whatever topping she's likely to enjoy.

I fought this fight with ds and I’m sorry now.
He’s 20 and easts everything he was just a creature of habit when he was younger.
My advice is to enjoy her and l her little quirks, they’ll be gone before you know it x

My oldest DD has become more and more fussy as she's got older.

Her favourite is jacket potato with beans and cheese. She also likes:

Pasta in tomatoey sauce (I can hide loads of veg in it too!)
Dippy egg & soldiers
Chicken fried rice
Chicken risotto (no mushrooms)
Spaghetti bolognese / meatballs
Roast dinner - she will eat the veg too
Sausage and mash
Fish fingers, waffles and veg
Pulled pork with sweetcorn and wedges
Toad in the hole (no onions)

And randomly, I made kedgeree the other day, with barely any curry powder in it and I thought I was going to have a fight on my hands to get her to eat it, but she wolfed it down and keeps saying how much she loved it!

I find if I get her involved in the food prep as well, she will be more inclined to eat it. Bonus to this is that I found out she is shit hot at making Yorkshire puddings!

We battled with my step daughter for years about her food fussiness and last year we came to understand that she has autism and that taking the food pressure off completely has really helped our family dynamics.
May be completely different to your situation but just thought I'd say it because I now feel quite guilty about presenting her with foods that made her feel anxious.

Seeline · 16/03/2019 11:13

Similar things:
Chicken nuggets
Fish fingers
Lasagna
Potato wedges
Macaroni cheese
Veg risotto

Seeline · 16/03/2019 11:16

Oh - I used to make a tomato sauce for pasta. Just tinned tomatoes, onion, garlic, herbs and then throw in any veg I had around - carrots, red pepper, peeled courgette ( green bits were a no-brainer no), and then blitz it in a processor. Great way if getting extra veg down them.

Savoury rice. I found DC would eat the rubishy packet versions of thinsg more readily first, then you gradually switch top the healthy homemade. So Ainsley or Lloyd Grssman stir in packets of flavouring for rice. Then if she eats it, nect time add a tiny amount of peas. Then siome very very finely chopped onion and red pepper etc. Gradualy increase until it is a healthy version.

Have you tried pasties? Chicken, leek and mushroom (with the veg chopped almost to a puree) in puff pasty case

Sweet potato fries
chicken goujons
fish fingers/goujons
quorn mince chilli or bolognese

I would talk to het and ask her what she likes and doesn't like about foods.

By DS is very texture driven so I find something he likes and offer him things of a similar texture.

Do it in a relaxed way and get a feel for what causes her issues with eating.
And don't feel pressured to have her eat a massive range. As long as she is getting stuff from the food groups which she seems to be, she is fine and will broaden her palate in her own time

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 16/03/2019 12:03

Thanks so much for suggestions.

I’ve talked to her lots of times and it’s just that she she doesn’t like certain foods!
Tbh I was extremely fussy as a child but eat so much better now. I just think her diet could do with a lot more variation .

I do make my own pasta sauce and she does reluctantly eat it.
She doesn’t eat baked pot, I don’t either 😬
She also doesn’t like chips!
I’ve tried making my own chicken nuggets but she didn’t like them, the quorn ones are the only ones she eats.

Also she loves pizza but doesn’t like my homemade one but I will give the Jamie Oliver one a go thanks .

She eats lots of fruit but the only veg really is carrots , sweet corn , broccoli. The rest is hidden in soups and sauces.

Thanks for suggestions I will try some of them Smile

Sorry she actually loves peas too , I make my own savory rice but she doesn’t like it Confused
Can you recommend a packet savory rice? Is it in the frozen section ?

OP posts:
EleanorLavish · 16/03/2019 12:15

Tesco do a yum savoury rice. It’s in the frozen section alongside the regular white frozen rice.
Her diet is quite good really. I too have a DS with Aspergers who eats no veg, no meat, no fish, no pasta, no eggs, no rice, no dairy, no sandwiches...you get the gist.Grin
He is a strapping 5’9” and is still growing. He lives off Tesco skinny fries and M&Ms.
I guess it’s the monotony that is bugging you, but it’s a great starter and I’m sure she will e pans as she gets older.
My DS makes his own marguerita pizzas now!! Dairy! Veg! Woo hoo!!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/03/2019 14:03

Will she eat fish?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 16/03/2019 21:44

Haha @eleanor I too would live off skinny chips and m&ms if I could !!
Great he is making his own pizzas!!
Thanks yes I think it’s me getting fed up with doing the same dinners!

She doesn’t eat fish but she used to eat some salmon and cod in a potato pie type thing . That’s a no now I fortunately

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/03/2019 21:46

If she used to eat fish could you try making fish cakes?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 16/03/2019 22:49

@atleastitsnotmonday

I haven’t thought about fish cakes, they might work !
I will look for some recipes, Thanks Smile

Shepherd's pie
Build your own fajitas, with fried chicken/steak, and stir fried carrots, broccoli, sweetcorn and peas. Maybe try mange tout. Sour cream/guacamole if wanted.
Carrot and cucumber dips with hummus, as a starter.
Veg soup and French bread.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 17/03/2019 08:10

Fish cakes are fab for hiding a multitude of things! You can obviously use what ever fish, combine with mash potato/sweet potato/add in any other root veg mashed, then chuck in some peas, sweetcorn, finely diced peppers etc etc, the possibilities are endless!
