I have volunteered in a role for five years and a salaried position for the same job had come up. I applied didn't get it! What more can I do. Feeling very disappointed right now!

No advice but that really is shit

AnneEyhtMeyer · 15/03/2019 23:15

Leave. They don't value you because you've been working free of charge for too long.

AppleDump · 15/03/2019 23:17

I'd personally stop now. Is it in a school by any chance?

Be kind to yourself x

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:17

I do feel like saying "fuck you" I'm off right now.

kingfisherblue33 · 15/03/2019 23:18

Shit. I’d leave. They clearly don’t value you. See where else would value you!

StephsCaddy · 15/03/2019 23:18

That’s really shit.
I’d wind down the volunteering if I were you.

donajimena · 15/03/2019 23:18

Was it a TA role? Been there. Gave up. I'm glad now.

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:18

It's a library.

StephsCaddy · 15/03/2019 23:19

Although maintain your professionalism if you do decide to leave. You’ve been there 5 yrs and you’re bound to get a great reference.

AppleDump · 15/03/2019 23:20

Did they give you feedback?

GoGoGadgetGin · 15/03/2019 23:20

Arses! Leave, they don't deserve your loyalty or support.

MrsAmaretto · 15/03/2019 23:21

Leave. It’s taking the piss having 2 people doing the same job and only 1 gets paid.

Urgh2019 · 15/03/2019 23:21

Leave. 100%. Someone else will want you, you have the experience for your CV, you owe them nothing more.

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:21

They said on my feedback that it was a very close call but I hadn't explained my answers enough so basically hadn't told the monkey how to grind!

OP posts:
Starlight456 · 15/03/2019 23:21

I would ask for feedback but no I wouldn’t stay either

GreenTulips · 15/03/2019 23:23

They always do a points score system so you needed to over explain to her the boxes ticked

Leave, you are doing someone out of paid employment unless it’s a couple of hours a week only

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:26

The irony is that i don't actually need the job as I have a family business that is successful it's just something that I really enjoy. But now I feel very undervalued and what's the point??

OP posts:
AppleDump · 15/03/2019 23:32

Hate that you ' didn't answer the question ' crap. They have physically seen you do the job for 5 years without any problems yet give it to someone else. Fuckers

I couldn't go back on principle

whiteroseredrose · 15/03/2019 23:33

I'd find somewhere else to volunteer. A bit of a change.

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:34

Thank you to everyone who replied I think a change as suggested is probably for the best.

Wolfiefan · 15/03/2019 23:35

Didn’t you originally post that you didn’t interview well? You can’t blame them for appointing someone else if they were amazing at interview.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 15/03/2019 23:35

I’d leave too. Sad

Coronapop · 15/03/2019 23:36

It really annoys me when employers do this. They have someone tried and tested over a long period and instead of offering them the job they offer to an unknown on the basis of a slightly more articulate interview. It's so short sighted. Interviews are known to be a not very reliable means of recruiting the best person anyway.
Was it a competency based interview by any chance?

Urgh2019 · 15/03/2019 23:37

I have worked in HR. If they had wanted you it would have happened. Leave before they suggest you train the new person too.

CourageCalls · 15/03/2019 23:37

This is my first post I have not said anything about the interview.
