Brexit- are we?

There have been so many votes this week I’ve lost track.

I understand the next vote (to agree TM’s deal) will result in a leaving date of the 30th June. But, legally speaking, isn’t the 29th March still a thing? How likely is it that we will? It’s less than 2 weeks away!

I don’t want to leave- I just want to know what’s happening!

Assuming May's WA passes on its third attempt next week, May will then ask the EU27 for a short extension to give time for passing legislation, implementing the deal, etc. If they agree to that, we leave at the end of June.

If the EU27 don't grant a short extension, the default position is that we leave on March 29th as originally planned.

If May's WA doesn't pass then she's meant to ask for a longer extension from the EU27. The duration of that hasn't been specified, but a lot of people have been talking about 21 months. That gives time to work out a new approach - potentially a different deal, or a refinement on the existing one, or another referendum, etc.

So, in summary, we will either leave on the 29th March, the end of June, an unspecified future date (2021?), or not at all. If this seems confusing it's because it is, the whole thing is a mess.

Again but isn't the EU asking for another billion quid a month extra on any extension? Is that true?

It does seem like she is trying to pay the DUP to stand with her again.
Or the DUP is offering to be bought.

Thank you very much- that makes sense.

Unlike what’s actually happening. That makes no sense. How can such a big thing still be undecided this close to the wire?!

That's not what I'm asking though. Is the EU going to charge 1 billion a month on top of the 'divorce bill' for an extension while the divvys in charge fuck about with their never being voted in again thing they've got going on?

scaryteacher · 15/03/2019 22:54

The EU don't want us to have a long extension as that might mean that either our in May. The MEPs may then have to sit for the full five years, which is a problem. Furthermore, if we do extend, there is a very high chance of any MEPs returned by the UK being very anti EU, and allying with other anti EU groups in the Eu Parl.

If MV3 doesn't get through, and then she tries MV4 (if the speaker allows it), then if time runs out, we leave on March 29th with no WA in place. There is also the very real possibility that one of the EU27 might decide that they wish to veto any extension.

Ther has been enough time for planning for a no deal Brexit, and those that wish to remain have had enough timne to call the government to account on this. leaving it all til the last minute, when all parties knew when the last minute was, covers neither the govt, nor the remainers with glory, especially given the latter voted to allow Article 50 to be triggered. If they didn't want it to happen, why bloody vote for it in the first place?

scaryteacher · 15/03/2019 22:56

Gamer there will undoubtedly be a cost for any extension. If it's a short one, it might just be money...if it's a long one, it might be our fisheries and Gibraltar.

BoneyBackJefferson · 15/03/2019 23:07

Sorry gamer some of my post is missing.

holly1501 · 15/03/2019 23:10

I said right the go Brexit wouldn't happen and that politics would kill it, and I think that is what is happening at the moment.
