Does anyone get milk delivered?

I see one of our neighbours use milk and more. I quite like the idea of having milk delivered and cutting down on our plastic so just had a look at their website. It’s bloody expensive! Over 3 times the price of supermarket milk. I might still consider it if it was a better deal for the farmers but I’m not sure that’s the case. Does anyone know? The convenience factor isn’t a major factor as we currently have Ocado weekly and I walk past a small supermarket on the school run 4 times a day.

I love our milkman. We can get loads of things from him including but milks and similar, bread, juice, yoghurts, eggs etc.

Don’t have an issue with things going off as he delivers about 4:30am. Do have an issue with foxes pinching the eggs though.

I have a milkman (Milk and More) and although the milk is more expensive I would never just pop in and get a pint. It would always be a pint of milk and a jar of jam and a bag of crisps and this and that and the other that I really didn't need. Overall, I'm saving I reckon.

Submariner · 15/03/2019 19:15

We do and I really like it. DH and I are vegan so we only need milk for the kids. We were getting one or two pinters at a time to keep it fresh and it was a lot of plastic every week. It is more expensive but because we don't get a lot it's not too noticeable.

EmpressJewel · 15/03/2019 19:26

No.

We once had a leaflet through the door inquiring if we wanted a delivery, but we wouldn't have been in when the milk was delivered. I suspect it's the same for many of our neighbours.

Howzaboutye · 15/03/2019 19:28

Oh yes it definitely saves money in the long run, who has ever only bought milk from Tesco etc?!

They do need to modernize their 'back end' so to speak Grin

The accounts team is a bit painful.

And yes milk should cost more that it does in the supermarkets. I think the farmers hardly break even. Which, considering the work they do, is really crap. I'd rather pay more for cows that can go outside etc, rather than being cooped up in big sheds all year as margins are so slim.

Is the supermarket milk smelling of plastic a thing? I used to be able to smell a strange plastic smell from it sometimes. It was awful pouring it down the sink, but it just didn't smell right to me. (I have an exceedingly good sense of smell)

And our milkman uses an electric vehicle so it's silent, and puts it in the shade so it doesn't get hot in the summer (in the south east here, it can be 18 degrees by 9am in the summer)

Sexnotgender · 15/03/2019 19:33

I do, I get it in glass bottles. Love it.

That's weird. When were they going to deliver it?

Aragog · 15/03/2019 19:38

We have milk delivered by a milkman. Have done since we moved here some 13+ years ago.

We don't use much milk - we only have 4 or 5 pints delivered a week, but I like that it comes fresh every other day. I don't really like milk and I can taste the subtle change when its more than a couple of days old. We get top ups via Ocado if we have people coming to stay.

Not sure how much it costs but we don't use that much so it is relatively negligible for us.

I like the regular delivery and the personal touch. Our milk comes in glass bottles which we run through the dishwasher or at least rinse before leaving them out the night before.

Our milkman comes in the early hours - around 1/2am - so we always have milk waiting for us. We can leave notes for more/less on a daily basis, and let them know if we are going away. We pay online once a month or so.

The milkman is a good crime watch around the local area too - a number of times he's scared away would be car thieves, or reported suspicious activity to the police.

Scrowy · 15/03/2019 19:38

Can any of the (ahem) older mumsnetters recall what milk from the milkman used to cost per pint before supermarket milk became the norm? I wouldn't be surprised if it's not much different to now. I'm talking maybe mid 80s - early 90s.

For what it's worth OP the supermarkets are making a loss on milk which is why they sell it so cheaply. As many have pointed out you might pop in for 4 pints of milk but you nearly always come out with a basket full of items. That's the point of having milk as a 'loss leader'.

Howzaboutye · 15/03/2019 20:11

Ah that makes sense. But I wonder if they pay the farmers the same as Milk&More do

It would be great if they came onto the thread!

ilovesooty · 15/03/2019 20:21

Yes. My milkman lives next door.

bigbluebus · 15/03/2019 20:25

Used to use a local milkman (not M&M) but cancelled him about a year ago. He only delivered 3 times a week - which wasn't really a problem but he started getting later and later so he started to deliver after I had gone out in the morning. He also left milk on a number of occasions when I had cancelled it (in writing) due to being away. Whilst he didn't charge for the milk left on those occasions, I considered it to be a security risk plus I had the pleasure of disposing of sour milk upon my return. He does, however, deliver to the village shop so I can buy milk from there when I run out - although it isn't in glass bottles!

user1471451866 · 15/03/2019 20:34

We signed up to a new milkman but he then got in touch to say he would deliver around 11am. Nobody at home at that time unfortunately.

Freshprincess · 15/03/2019 20:41

I used Milk and More for a while. It wasn’t glass bottles though, so no saving on plastic.

I gave up after the milkman delivered to the wrong address many times and then started to hassle me on the doorstep for money.

CurbsideProphet · 15/03/2019 20:41

We get milk (glass bottles) and eggs delivered from a local farm. They deliver 4 days a week, before 6am. We even get special festive tops for Christmas Smile
If we get 4 pints and 1 box of eggs it costs approx £4.20. I think that's reasonable, plus we can just leave a note out if we want more/less. I like supporting local businesses Smile

AuntieOxident · 15/03/2019 20:42

Our milkman comes early, around 5 to 6 am but I never hear him. We have an insulated bottle holder which keeps the milk cool in the summer and it's left in a closed porch anyway.
We pay the bill by direct debit. We hardly ever run out of milk. I don't mind that it's more expensive than supermarket milk - It tastes better and is really convenient for us as country dwellers.
Further plus points are the reusable glass bottles, electric vehicle, and the cream, bread, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and more see what I did there? that you can order as and when. And no delivery charges ever.

OxanaVorontsova · 15/03/2019 20:49

We get ours delivered twice a week, around 3am, with a dozen eggs once a week. I love it, I don’t care that it costs more, it is sustainable and fresh and reliable, even in heavy snow (we’re in County Durham, so this happens fairly often!). We pay by bank transfer and cancel by email for holidays.
