Those with 8/9/10 year olds in their own room...

My daughter is keen to have a high sleeper bed when she moves into her own room in our new home.

I feel that in a year or two she won’t want to climb up into bed, and think a standard single bed is more suitable. It’s a long, narrow and smallish room so I understand the space benefits of a high sleeper, but don’t want to have to buy a new bed in a couple of years.

Would love to hear from others who have kids a similar age?

14yo DD has had a high sleeper since she was 6. She is still fine in it, but is petite.

It is a right pain changing the sheets though.

My 10 year old has a high sleeper in a small room which has been great the last few years to store toys.

She now hates it and wants a new one

Our DS (11) will be getting a mid sleeper soon, he's in the box room and we need to maximise the space. He's really looking forward to it!

DD got a high bed with a desk underneath at 6. Went back to a standard single at 9 as she didn't like being so close to the ceiling as she got bigger. DS then wanted it. I'm in the process of selling it because he doesn't like it. The main reason is that I won't climb up to get into bed with him to read/ have a cuddle. I'm pleased, I miss snuggling up with him too.

I had one from age 7-13 and then got a low one again.

My Dd got a high sleeper when she was 9 (we bought second hand from an fb selling page) She is 12 now and doesnt want it any more. We still have her old bed and Ds will have the high sleeper. Its an absolute PITA to change the bed though !!

Recently decorated my 9 year old DD room and changed from bunk beds, left over from when she shared with other DD, to a double bed. She looks tiny in it but loves the space and it will do her for years.

They were mid sleepers but we cut them down. They were ok for a whi,e but then it was still a pain changing the sheet, couldn’t sit with them etc. Plain single beds, however my dd 14 wants a hammock really.

Thistles24 · 15/03/2019 22:33

The majority I know get rid of their mid/high sleepers around that age and into single/double beds. DS1 got a double at 9, and DS2 will probably be the same, though his room is smaller so will probably be a small double that he gets.

My 8 year old has a Flexa mid sleeper - it can be converted to a high sleeper or a normal single bed (it was a single when we bought it, then we bought the conversion kit. We'll convert it back to a single when she asks.

(We bought the Flexa beds when both DDs were toddlers and they have been brilliant. Recently converted older DD's single bed to add drawers and a trundle bed underneath for sleepovers.)

Mine is 9 and loves her high sleeper. She's in the box room so it's the only way for her to have room to play in there when her friend's come round. She can even have sleepovers because the bottom converts to a bottom bunk.

I had a high sleeper that my dad built from when I was 10 til I came home from a gap year age 19 and 6 months pregnant. If I hadn't been pg I'd have carried on with the high sleeper because it gave me so much more space.
