Ultrasound and CT scan gave completely different results

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I got bad news from the ultrasound which showed a mass and consultant requested immediate CT scan which was clear! I'm obviously happy but also concerned about differing results.

I would like to offer a virtual handhold as I had something similar and can fully understand how worried you must be.

I had a CT scan which showed a 'small' mass as an incidental finding because they had actually been looking for something else.

Was referred on to a consultant for an ultrasound who reported a 3.5cm lesion with a 1 cm cystic component, but was unable to identify what it actually is.

Then sent on to have a MRI scan that showed an unidentifiable 1cm cystic lesion, but no further mass.

Finally got an appointment with a specialist teaching hospital for further evaluation. Due to the lesion's location no biopsy was carried out, but I had blood tests and watch and wait monitoring over a 2-year period after which I was discharged.

I still don't know what it is ...

Forgot to mention that I was told that MRI/CT scan results trump the ultrasound.

Did you have a CT with contrast dye?

So the consultant's secretary contacted me yesterday to say my case was mentioned at the weekly multi disciplinary team meeting and I've to go for a laparoscopy next week. Should I be worried? Also, what are these meetings? I don't know what was decided so I'm a bit in the dark.

MDT meetings are doctors, radiologists, pathologists, sometimes other hcps, in a room looking at scans and results. They decide collectively what the next step should be. It sounds like they want to get a sample from whatever this is. Radiology images are one way of looking at something but getting cells from it and looking at those under a microscope will tell you more. Think of it this way, squashed brown stuff on a cushion will look like poo or chocolate, could be either. Under a microscope with some actual stuff you'll know which it is.
Ask to speak to your consultant before the surgery and say you want to see the images then they can explain what they are looking at.

Thanks. Just was wondering is it worth going ahead with laparoscopy if CT was okay, even though ultrasound wasn't. I suppose the consultant knows best!
