What actually are the Masons?

And what do they do? Why is it so secretive? I know some men involved, but they never divulge anything. Why? What is the treat?

Oh, no doubt deluded and they’ve just taken the KT name with absolutely no intention of being a member of the Pope’s militia (all rather elderly and frail). On reflection a Catholic version of Freemasonry that I wasn’t aware of!

There was a documentary series maybe on Netflix or Now TV where the masons allowed filming in lodges and at ladies nights. They (obviously) claimed all was legit and they were doing it to dispel some of the conspiracy theories and show that they were a charitable organisation only but it still looked like a massive boy's club.

Now I am a beaver leader, and love doing little ceremonies with the 6-8 year olds when they win badges.

The idea of doing something for just adults - now, that is a bit weird.

I did once take some exams in a Masonic hall, it was a lovely building, with high up windows.

@Redglitter
Ive got a friend who's Catholic & held various offices in the Masons. His brother is also a member as is his Dad & his Grandfather before him
He couldn’t have been a Catholic and a Mason pre 1980s.

Family all Catholics. He & his brother born in the 60s. First communion done and went to Catholic schools. A fact the Lodge are well aware of.

Redglitter · 15/03/2019 19:33

Though having looked it up it seems it's the Catholic church who say the 2 are not compatible. I can only assume the Lodge doesn't have a problem with Catholic members

I believe he became a Mason in 1980 now I think of it

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 15/03/2019 19:39

Yes, it’s the Catholic Church who would have excommunicated them.

pinegreen · 15/03/2019 20:04

In the city I’m from, Masons exacted huge discrimination against Catholics across all levels of civil and state service. It was systemic and ran well into the 90s, particularly in the police force. My grandfather was a Mason.

I was actually on the tube the other day with a young Mason reading his little Masonry (?) guide - it was literally gibberish as far as I could tell over his shoulder.

Joebloggswazere · 15/03/2019 20:09

Freemasons where I live have recently donated a new bike to the blood bike charity. Very nice of them indeed.

hellenbackagen · 16/03/2019 00:06

The only mason I knew was a head teacher.

Im police and no not a single officer in the masons.

hellenbackagen · 16/03/2019 00:06

*know

KissingInTheRain · 16/03/2019 00:13

The police were ordered not to join weren’t they?

I saw a programme about the Masons a while ago and it all looked quaint and harmless to me. Certainly less vicious, cliquey and secretive than some book clubs and tennis clubs that I’ve been a member of.

CallMeRachel · 16/03/2019 17:54

It's an old boys club. Police officers who joined in the 70's & 80's were in the Masons. Not all but a lot. It wasn't spoken about.
