Anyone else's PIL tell the SAME stories all the time

Even when I say, oh yes you've told this one before, they'll continue to retell the bloody anecdote that wasn't witty, funny or interesting the first time.

I think I need to work on my fake interested face and fake laugh.

As people age they can become repetitive. Perhaps be a little kinder, as this will happen to you too.

BoomTish · 14/03/2019 20:56

Yes.

But then again, so do my parents.

Drogosnextwife · 14/03/2019 20:57

Not my PIL, my own parents do this, especially my mum. I can here the same stories every day for a whole week. She's only 60!

avocuddl · 14/03/2019 20:58

Should have added 'light hearted' as they're lovely.

Yes! My FIL retired over twenty years ago and he still tells stories of things he did at work (always painting himself in a very positive light). My parents don't do this.

avocuddl · 14/03/2019 20:59

My parents don't do this.

Yes! Which is odd because there is plenty to talk about.

Flowerydenimdress · 14/03/2019 21:00

I have heard the same stories over and over my whole life. I know instantly what story will get repeated depending on the topic we end up on. Sometimes can be repeated 2-3 times a month. At the moment, her birth story is on loop because we know so many people who are pregnant. I always do wonder, does she think this is the first time I have heard this?!

Pringlemunchers · 14/03/2019 21:00

Yes! Without asking about what's going on elsewhere, same old stories . Why is that ?

ShesABelter · 14/03/2019 21:00

My dad does it does mine and my siblings in. He's not even old. I say you have told me this numerous times and he still carries on.

crosspelican · 14/03/2019 21:01

My Dad does this endlessly.

avocuddl · 14/03/2019 21:01

Haha flower this is my exact thought! Surely they know they've told me before. Sometimes I even finish the story for them and they still don't get it 🤦🏽‍♀️

It’s not a PIL thing, it’s an older thing.

The older you get, the less people you see and the less places you go, so the less you have to talk about. It’s very sad but I suspect it comes to us all eventually, only when we start doing it, it won’t be annoying because we won’t rememebr we have already told you that story 🤷‍♀️

HumphreyCobblers · 14/03/2019 21:01

Not all elderly people do this at all!

I am worried that I might do this, I intend to guard against it.

Blissx · 14/03/2019 21:02

Ha ha ha, yes! MiL. It’s become a little game with us to guess how many stories she’ll repeat when we see her! She’s not elderly either. Just likes talking Grin

avocuddl · 14/03/2019 21:03

Maybe that's a really sad alternative Dr Seus 😂

My now expil had a time share abroad. Same fortnight every year.
I kid you not when they got back fil washed /ironed and repacked the clothes in the holiday cases ready for the next year.
They still made us look through bloody holiday photos every year!!
Deja vu every bloody year!!

Thankssomuch · 14/03/2019 21:03

All the time.

As do my own parents. Continually.

Pringlemunchers · 14/03/2019 21:04

But why don't they ask about other things, if they don't have much going on ?

Shuggas · 14/03/2019 21:04

10000% yes Grin

DownWentTheFlag · 14/03/2019 21:04

My DH’s entire childhood has been boiled down to half a dozen anecdotes, re-told so often it’s as if I had been there myself.
The one about the toilets at primary school.
The one about the carbon monoxide alarm.
The one about going on the bus.
The one about Asda cafe.
The one about moving house.
The one about buying a toy for his brother.

They are lovely people though Smile

Cookingwithgasnow · 14/03/2019 21:04

Omg my dad does this. It’s so annoying.

avocuddl · 14/03/2019 21:05

And yes my pil are not elderly at all. Just like talking I think

My fil has told me he used to be an engineer at least twenty billion times, he’s not even old!

wannabebetter · 14/03/2019 21:09

My DDad told the same 5 stories in a loop endlessly. He died last month & id do anything to hear his stories again - sorry to bring down the mood!!
