Would you be annoyed if a hotel you were staying in a hotel that was undergoing renovations?

Booked a really nice (expensive) 5* hotel for a city break. Part of the appeal of the hotel is its architecture in public space.

We arrived and the lobby/lounge and bar, and an entire floor are undergoing major renovation works. This means the main bar is closed, as is the café. Part of the reason I booked the hotel was for the use of the public area to do work! Instead I had to sit and do work on a sofa in the entrance hall with all passers by and builders sawing due to my room waiting to be cleaned.

It’s also a shame I won’t get to sit in the cafe and marvel at the architecture- but at least it’s being preserved.

The main staircase too is not really meant to be used either due to them cutting wood on the landing of the closed off floor.

Currently the only place for guests to sit and relax other than their rooms are on two sofas against the wall as you enter or in a small make shift reception room.

I feel that if you are paying top whack for a fancy hotel, you ought to get warned at time of booking (2 weeks ago).

If they hadn't forewarned you about the renovation works, then yes I'd be a bit peeved.

Was there no mention of renovations at booking?
I would be miffed OP, yes.

Are you sure you are paying the usual room rate? I was quite surprised to get a room in a very central London hotel on a Saturday night a few months ago for a lot less than I expected; a quick look at the most recent reviews on booking.com/tripadviser mentioned ongoing building work, which explained the lower price - still not dirt cheap but considerably less than it would have been.

I would definitely have a word with the manager, in any case, if you think you are not getting value for money or not getting what you booked.

I recently stayed at what would usually be an expensive hotel but was discounted due to renovation. I didn’t mind as I was prewarned and discounted, but if I hadn’t been I would have been pissed.

I'd be really annoyed at that.

Did you book with the hotel directly, or did you book through a site like Booking.com or something similar? They can sometimes be guilty of omitting important information that the hotel's own website would have told you.

We booked directly with the hotel on their website, and didn’t get any discount rate due to building works. We got 10% off which is the norm for booking direct with the hotel for any period of time. Room service keeps knocking at 8:40 too !

Totally agree. Talk to manager. Put it in writing as a complaint. You haven’t had amenities the hotel advertised and you weren’t given notice. I’d be hopping mad.
