12yo DC1 wants a shopping trip for her birthday. We do actually live 15mins drive from the centre of a big city with decent shops, but to make it more of an occasion I'm up for going somewhere different - even doing an overnight trip if I can get a decently priced Premier Inn. Where do you rate?

Just somewhere pleasant to wander with a good mix of High Street stores and ideally a few independents/alternative shops, and some decent lunch options.

Brighton! And you get to go to the seaside afterwards!

I wish - I wish someone could show me what's so great about Chester. It has a nice Cathedral. And you can pay to be taken along an unexceptional stretch of river. But there's no shopping to speak of. Just the usual dull chains. And some cobbles. Confused

MouseRatFan · 14/03/2019 13:22

Glasgow or Bath are my favourites for a shopping weekend.

NotPennysBoat · 14/03/2019 13:28

Manchester every time. Loads of great shops in a not-too-big area. Plenty of nice 'coffee & cake' stops too! City centre is better than Trafford Centre IMO, but it would be v easy to do both in two days. Enjoy!

I must say if I were 12 I'd adore a trip to the vintage clothing market in Bath. (Forgotten what it's called. Does it still exist?) Combined with beautiful surroundings, a relaxed atmosphere and nice places to eat, it would be a perfect day.)

llangennith · 14/03/2019 13:58

Most shopping centres have similar clothes and coffee shops, choose somewhere that has other things to offer.
Cardiff has a good shopping centre and malls, is next to the station, the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff castle and large grounds and park are all a few minutes walk from the town centre.
Also many cinemas and a 10 minute walk from Cardiff Bay.
Brighton has a big shopping centre, 5 minutes walk from the station and beachfront. You could easily spend a whole weekend there.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/03/2019 14:10

Liverpool or Leicester is not bad. Better than Nottingham!

ReggieWoo · 14/03/2019 14:14

Bath definitely

newnameyawn · 14/03/2019 14:21

Clearly Westfield

ohtheholidays · 14/03/2019 14:21

Birmingham is brilliant especially if you go when the markets are open.

There are so many lovely places to have lunch as well if you like chinese food they have tons of lovely Chinese restaurants there,we've been to Birmingham a few times(some of my DH's family live there)and we stay in a premier inn each time we go there and we always(there's 7 of us me,DH and our 5DC)have a lovely time.

Ginger1982 · 14/03/2019 14:22

Glasgow or Edinburgh 👍🏻

Ohyesiam · 14/03/2019 14:23

Have you tried Kensington high street in London op, much nicer than oxford street.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/03/2019 14:43

Another vote for Bath Biased as I was born and bred, but it has everything a 12 year old and her Mum would enjoy
It has a new Premier inn next door to an odeon cinema with restaurants and approx 10 minutes walk from City cente

WholeL0ttaRosie · 14/03/2019 14:51

I would go to Cheshire Oaks, stay overnight at the Travelodge there, then Liverpool the following day.

BitchQueen90 · 14/03/2019 14:58

I live in Nottingham, it's OK for shopping but Manchester is loads better.

chickenalapesh · 14/03/2019 15:02

It's London really but Manchester is more enjoyable

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 14/03/2019 15:09

Canterbury is nice

JustBeenNosey · 14/03/2019 15:12

Leeds is good for high street shops.

Or Meadowhall in Sheffield? Trafford centre/Manchester

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 14/03/2019 15:24

London is still a no Grin. High Street Ken hasn't been the same since Hyper Hyper closed

Interested to read all the love for Manchester. Looks like the grass isn't always greener - this is our local option ! Perhaps we should save on petrol and a Premier Inn and add this to the shopping budget. Affleck's Palace and the Northern Quarter generally does take some beating...

Most cities have the same shops! But dinner in a restaurant and staying in a hotel will make it special. Nottingham city centre has a Hilton right the shops and we paid £70 last year including breakfast! My DD's likes somewhere with mocktails for dinner!

thenightsky · 14/03/2019 15:28

Leeds. Lovely shops, plus plenty of indie cafes for lunch. Not too spread out so everything in easy walking distance. Stay at the Park Plaza, right next door to shopping centre.

anniehm · 14/03/2019 15:28

Though if she's also into space, go to Leicester and have a trip to the space centre as well (premier inn is adjacent to train station)

17CherryTreeLane · 14/03/2019 15:35

Glasgow - great shopping!

MissEliza · 14/03/2019 17:56

Glasgow is a great city for shopping and restaurants although independent shops are a bit thin on the ground.

Kpo58 · 14/03/2019 18:03

It rather depends on what she is interested in and what she wants to buy.

For me most places are off limits if I want to buy a pair of shoes (because they are only sold in tiny people sizes), so it doesn't matter how nice a place is, if I can't buy what I want there.
