If you walked out of work and never returned what would happen?

Not that I would, but if you left at lunch and didn't come back what would happen? How long before anyone would notice. How long before you got sacked in your absence?

Longer than you'd think. A few people have done this a places I have worked and they get away with it for ages. But you need to know how to play the system with sick notes, the right illness, etc.

I’d get reported for child abandonment and bad mouthed around town. I’d never work as a childminder again Grin

HandbagCrazy · 14/03/2019 11:56

I would be missed within about 30 mins I think.

We have AWOL procedures that can technically be started a few hours after you're due in if you dont turn up and don't contact anyone but my company tend to wait a day or so. This has been beneficial for me as a family member was in an accident and I got called to the hospital a few years ago and didn't even think about work until I'd missed a whole day. I rang my boss who said nothing has happened as he knew I wouldn't just not turn up.

Not sure how long you have to be MIA here before losing your job but I don't think it's fast as they have to make a decent attempt to contact you and give you the opportunity to get in touch and explain why you haven't been in.

Old firm used to have an AWOL policy and followed this when people walked away and never returned to work.

People would notice after about 2 hours with me I think. First they'd assume I was at lunch and after that that I was elsewhere in the business.

Jellyfloodagain · 14/03/2019 11:57

They'd notice straight away due to it being a small company and I would be the only key holder on site. I'm not sure how long it would be until I was sacked.

My friend did this. They tried calling a bit, she didn't answer, then they fired her after three months. But she went to HR and ended up getting given a massive pay out.

Not quite sure how.

I few days at least I think. I tend to work from home a lot plus I'm part time. Probably the second week they'd start to wonder.

isseywithcats · 14/03/2019 13:00

it would be saturday at 8am when i dont turn up for work as im off tomorrow and if i said i was ill they would schedule me off for one week and if after that i had no good reason for not being there would be a disciplinary push it after that would be bye bye issey

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 14/03/2019 13:38

It would be a couple of days at least under normal circumstances - not today as I have something to monitor at 230.

haha. was going to post exactly the same thing. the 3 year olds would probably have a whale of a time till the police bashed the door in

BitchQueen90 · 14/03/2019 15:15

I did this when I worked as a bartender. I was sick of my lazy colleague doing no work and nobody pulling him up on it despite me mentioning it several times to management. I said I was going to the toilet and just left out the back door. Nothing happened and I never went back. Luckily I found a new job fairly quickly!

Twickerhun · 14/03/2019 15:19

I worked with someone who did this, went out for lunch and didn’t bother going back .

I think what happens would depend on how long you had worked for and how much of the absence (or capability or disciplinary) policy was in your contract.

happypotamus · 14/03/2019 15:22

People would notice about 5 minutes after I didn't come back from my break. They might try to phone me to see where I was. Ultimately, unless there were massive extenuating circumstances, I would be sacked and probably lose my professional registration.
