Living with bub in Peckham Rye

Hey mums, anyone got experience of the Peckham Rye area with a bubba?
Me and my little family will be moving back to London in June (from Sydney) and are considering the area near Peckham Rye park. We previously lived in Camberwell but I always felt there was more of a village feel in Peckham and more places to hang out in the daytime. Upon searching the web I’ve found lots of baby activities around Peckham and Dulwich. Any insights would be immensely helpful! My little one will be one at the time we move. Cheers!

My sister lived off lordship lane a few years ago & was burgled 3 times in 2 years.
One time she woke up to find a man half way through her bedroom window.
Needless to say she moved.
But tbf most inner London areas are crime ridden.

And, in the end, the vast majority of families happily get their children into a school they are very happy with. Individual horror stories do not a crisis make.

And only certain parts of Peckham are subject to higher crime.

MN can be a very squeamish middle class bubble.

Conversely, my sister has lived in a road off Lordship Lane for the past 15 years and hasn't once been broken into.

She has had her bike nicked though which she chained up in the front garden

I have lived in Brixton, Streatham and Peckham for 30 years and been subject to crime once. My job requires that I come home late night, always been safe.

That there is crime cannot be denied. But it doesn’t rule it define our lives.

Where do you live, Surferjet? Roughly?

Buxbaum · 14/03/2019 09:47

It’s great for families but Peckham is still Peckham and if you aren’t keen on a bit of grit then it isn’t for you. If OP is used to Camberwell, however, I think she has an idea of what she’s coming to.

Sounds like it’s changed massively since I moved then. Used to be a dump. Mind you was 20 odd years ago.

Applesaregreenandred · 14/03/2019 14:36

FFS I imagine that the OP is now totally regretting her plan to move back to the UK as she's probably worried that everyone she'll meet IRL will be as rude and bitchy as some of the posters on here.

HotpotLawyer · 14/03/2019 15:35

Luckily Peckham is a buzzing, thriving friendly family orientated area and the OP will find a warm welcome Smile

TheCrowFromBelow · 14/03/2019 15:48

It’s fab for young families and schools are good as well, there’s a New secondary secondary school in ED as well as Harris boys/girls etc.

We had to move as we couldn’t afford the next move up and our 2 bed flat was just too small for us but I do miss it! It has got eyewateringly trendy though

HotpotLawyer · 14/03/2019 16:02

Llot: yes: it has a farmer’s market Grin. And the coolest arts events in the Bussey Buildings and Peckham Levels.
And you knew about Bellenden Rd, right?

Buxbaum · 14/03/2019 16:15

Hotpot I’ve worked in Southwark and Lewisham secondary schools my whole career. I don’t need to be educated on what an exciting buzz the area now has. Nevertheless like most areas of London the incoming gentry haven’t entirely displaced the existing community, with all of the amazing community spirit and concurrent challenges that they have always had.

Again, if OP is used to Camberwell then I don’t think she’s in for any shocks but let’s not do the people of Peckham a disservice by pretending that it’s wall-to-wall farmers’ markets and gastropubs.

HotpotLawyer · 14/03/2019 16:59

Thank god it is not, yet. (All farmers markets etc)

But neither is it a crime ridden dump. Both words used on this thread.

And my Bellenden Rd / farmer’s market comments were to a poster who hasn’t been there for 20 years.

I work with young people in Lambeth and Southwark.

The vast majority of people in Peckham whether they live on the high density estates or the genteel terraces are just normal families trying to get by the best they can. It doesn’t do anyone justice to present the whole area as a run down crime ridden dump.

Of course there is crime, and the victims of the worst of the crime are the ones living in the most challenging circumstances. Many people in those communities are fighting hard to make positive changes. I can’t stand the demonisation of anywhere that has estates. Because in many cases, that’s what it amounts to.

The OP is very specific about the area around Peckham she is interested in.

In the context of London (it isn’t Tunbridge Wells or Henley) it is pretty much as I described (and a PP called it Nappy Valley), with obvious urban grit.

The OP knows that. She lived in Camberwell. Ages ago.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/03/2019 17:20

There are lots of us in the area, it seems. We should have a mini meet up! Op, I hope you make it over here - it's a friendly place and I'm sure you and your bub will have a very warm welcome!
