If you have a pedigree cat, do they go outside?

We have our first ever pedigree cat. She’s currently indoors due to the fact she’s not been with us long.

So many people have advised I keep her as an indoor cat.

All of our previous cats have always gone in and out as they wish.

We live in a sleepy town with fairly low crime rate on a quiet cup-de-sac

Wdyd?

I have a Siberian. It’s too cold between October and April for her to be outside. She will wear a harness, so we take her outside in Summer.

Personally, I think all cats, regardless of breed should be able to go outside. Unless they have to be kept inside due to health reasons or very old age/hearing/eyesight probIems etc. I wouldn't choose to get a cat if it meant it had to be kept inside because of its breed. But that said, all my cats have been rescues. One looks pedigree as he has a lot of a particular breed in him but I've never thought twice about letting him out.

My parents adopted a pedigree that they were told was indoor. Soon became clear that he isn't, so he goes out. He's quite distinctive so people know where he lived.

We didn't let ours out for a while and then they were restricted to our garden only. That's not practical in this house and so over time they've both roamed further afield. Old lady Siamese doesn't go very far, she likes fresh air, lying in the sun and will go for the odd wander round the neighbouring gardens but is only usually out for 5 or 10 minutes apart from last summer when she lay in the sun a lot.

Idiot cat has taken to it like a duck to water, fights with the other cat on the street, roams far and wide and can often be spotted in ridiculous places, like sunning himself on someone's roof. We do worry about him, mostly about traffic, but he is a strange mix of bolshy little fucker and petrified, he hates people he doesn't know and gets scared of loud noises so we think he'll be OK. Only worry is if he gets trapped between groups of people or two cars or something and bolts. We talked it over and decided this life is better for him, even if (and god knows we hope it isn't) it's shorter than it might otherwise have been. We couldn't keep him in now anyway, he drives us mad at the best of times.

Both are kept in over night. Idiot cat brings home birds and mice and if he comes back in with one unnoticed, tends to deposit them in places that we don't immediately notice. Nice.
