What shall I serve with fish pie??

And what would you do with pork belly?

And if you've had anything particularly yummy lately, please share! I'm trying to get out of boring food rut :)

I put a layer of belly pork in a deep dish, cover with thinly sliced peeled apple and a thick layer of breadcrumbs or a packet of that dry stuffing mix. Bake in the oven for about 50 mins, it's delicious Smile

Ricekrispie22 · 13/03/2019 17:35

Celeriac goes really well with fish pie, as does fennel.

You could serve pork belly with sweet and sour cabbage and creamy mustard mash www.olivemagazine.com/recipes/meat-and-poultry/slow-cooked-crackling-pork-with-sweet-and-sour-cabbage-and-creamy-mustard-mash/
Or with creamed corn www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/creamed-corn-salad
If you fancy doing it Chinese style, serve it with steamed rice and greens. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/5532/crisp-chinese-pork

Raera · 13/03/2019 17:48

Currently got this marinating in the fridge
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/sticky-chinese-chicken-traybake
will serve with stir fry veg and noodles

Raera · 13/03/2019 17:53

Durham, what flavour of stuffing mix please? That sounds good and I'll raise you my favourite side dish to go with pork

Apologies for late reply, just had dinner Smile

I've used a few different flavours and even the bog standard sage and onion boxes of dried stuffing mix is nice. It's a while since I've made it so I might make it for tomorrow's dinner.

GabrielleNelson · 13/03/2019 19:44

We always have peas with fish pie. There might be any or all of the following in the pie: leeks, mushrooms, spinach. Sliced tomatoes on top sometimes. Mashed potato topping always!

lucysmam · 13/03/2019 20:29

@GabrielleNelson mushrooms in fish pie?? Leeks are something I hadn't considered adding too.

Many thanks for the recipe links, I'll see what the girls fancy trying tomorrow night & order any missing ingredients on next week's shop.

I roast baby plum tomatoes and mushrooms in the oven with a knob of butter and serve them with fish pie.,

GabrielleNelson · 13/03/2019 20:39

I think I wouldn't put mushrooms in unless I had some salmon in the fish pie mix. Leeks go brilliantly with salmon and smoked haddock and I love them, so I often put them in!

AdaColeman · 13/03/2019 20:53

To serve with fish pie, I do a mix of green vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, peas, romanesque cauliflower, green beans etc etc, any three together works well. I microwave them to keep the bright colour.
Braised fennel or buttered leeks are also good with fish pie.

I don't often have pork belly, but one way I like it is braised with ginger and Chinese five spice, and served with rice or noodles and hoi-sin sauce.

EEELA · 13/03/2019 21:31

DP made fish pie for my family last weekend, served with: garlic bread, homemade chips and buttered greens. Triple carbs. It was delicious but not the norm, usually we would just go for the buttered greens as a side. Not particularly interesting, sorry!

Raera · 13/03/2019 21:35

Thanks Durham, I have sage and onion in the cupboard, might try on Saturday (out on Thursday and Friday!)
I hope you enjoyed your dinner!

lucysmam · 28/03/2019 15:47

@DurhamDurham do you make the stuffing up or do you put it on top dry? The girls didn't like the look of the pork belly so I'm going to try your suggestion tonight with pork loin instead :)

OP posts:
DurhamDurham · 28/03/2019 18:22

I put it on dry...... I realise I've answered this late and you may already have had dinner already Grin

lucysmam · 28/03/2019 20:23

Grin we did have tea already! I mixed it up after much debating but used less water than it said so it was quite firm.

I'm not allowed to do the apple layer next time...dd2 didn't like that bit (even though she must eat at least ten of the bloomin' things a week Hmm ).

OP posts:
DurhamDurham · 28/03/2019 20:55

Pleased it was ok even if the apple layer wasn't a firm favourite with everyone Smile
