Are 1970s rock band groupies immune from underage sex scandals then?

On the back of the MJ superstar child abuse thread, my partner often comments: why are none of the

1970s superstar rock band singers being held to account for their groupies?

Apparently it was par for the course, and underage groupies were part of the music scene then, but because that sounds more glamorous and cool, those people - boys and girls, we are infamously looking at you, regal Freddy... - seem to have got away with it.

I mean I’d hate to have it confirmed one of the singers in my favourite 70s rock bands was doing a whole lotta rock n’ roll with 13 year old groupies, but I wouldn’t put it past him! And that must be the general attitude maybe?

Makes you wonder.

No they are not immune and if someone has evidence and wants to prosecute them then they are free to do so.

Gary Glitter?

OrangeJuiceandArmchairs · 13/03/2019 14:02

I know this isn't what you're asking but MJs victims were pre-pubescent. Groupies were older.

Not saying it was right AT all but MJ went to trouble of grooming and planning his abuse. I don't think this was the case with groupies as they weren't as 'involved'

AliceAforethought · 13/03/2019 14:04

As a PP says, if there are complaints and evidence then yes they can or should be prosecuted.

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/03/2019 14:24

I'm guessing they are immune. Bill Wyman was quite open about his abuse of Mandy Smith, and the tabloids portrayed it as glamorous and commendable.

And a certain 'Starman' is now a national treasure.

Mercury? What is he meant to have got away with?

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/03/2019 14:32

I've always wondered if Faith No More had someone in mind when they wrote Edge of the World

It was v common for band members to sleep with v young girls. Some were v young (13/14).
Bowie and Jimmy Page are often mentioned, but pretty sure lots of others did that too.

MyBreadIsEggy · 13/03/2019 16:18

I’m not saying it’s all of them, but I know some of the more infamous “baby groupies” as they were known didn’t and still don’t see themselves as victims.
Lori Maddox for example, lost her virginity to David Bowie at 14, famously had flings with various other massive stars of the 1970’s and has since made a fair amount of money writing a book about her experiences.
It’s grim.
But the reality of it is unless those girls wanted to press charges, there’s not really much that can be done I guess.
The whole thing makes my skin crawl.

Pretty sure you took something out of context that was said about him.

I'm old enough to have known a few girls who had sex with the Stones and the Beatles. I'm sure if they wanted to make a complaint, they'd be free to do so, but even now, those old gals are crazy proud of their connections. You can't expect the police to go after aging rock stars unless someone complains.

AliceAforethought · 13/03/2019 16:51

The Bill Wyman / Mandy Smith thing was shocking, wasn’t it Saskia ? Whilst I don’t entirely agree that it was portrayed as commendable in the papers, I couldn’t believe that no one was doing anything about it and he wasn’t locked up! She was 13 when he started grooming her (the word “grooming” is actually used on his Wikipedia page) and she claims their sexual relationship began when she was 14.
Horrific.

SaskiaRembrandt · 14/03/2019 16:03

It was shocking, Alice! Maybe commendable was the wrong word, but the attitude towards it seemed very relaxed.
