Is that what the MPs are planning?.... Just to vote against any possible plan just to get to the point were they vote for a no deal?

Are they going to vote for no deal tomorrow?!

No deal can only be prevented by

  • a deal
  • revoke
everything else leads to no deal in a few days time Sad Angry

This is what happens next. I believe the EU is hoping for a general election or another referendum, both of which will probably lead to us withdrawing Art 50.

The EU elections in May mean that if we've extended A50 then we'll have to elect MEPs. If we all vote for MEPs then that is surely tacit approval of EU membership?!

Personally I wish they'd all go for a walk in the sea Grin

JRM et al have now said they want no deal delayed until May 22nd as we are not ready

Really not ready what a surprise

OlgaArsenievnaOleinik · 13/03/2019 05:52

Mrs May needs to revoke Article 50 then go off on the sick for a while. She's utterly bonkers.

ScafellPoke · 13/03/2019 05:55

How on earth do they expect to be ready in a few months time?! They’ve had 2yrs!! If they’re not ready now they never will be.

Yes olga I think she’s lost all perspective

That confirms my worries that our MP wants no deal. He's a Conservative in a pro-Brexit area who voted against.

FrenchFancie · 13/03/2019 06:09

No deal can’t work - it would be a disaster for the U.K. mp’s will not vote for it.
The big issue is wether the EU will allow us an extension- there is some strong muttering that they won’t. We have, after all, been working at this very hard for 2/3 years and an extra six months won’t change that much.

I suspect the only rational way forward is no Brexit.
Or a final, last minute crunch vote again on the Brexit deal the night before, when everyone’s backs are against the wall and there’s no where else left to turn to.

Either way, it’s a fucking shambles and has done the uk’s reputation a huge amount of harm internationally (and I say this as a Brit living abroad.... seriously I’ve lost track of the numbers of locals who say to me ‘wtf is your country doing?!?)

Sorry if this sounds stupid but can I ask:

  1. If we take no deal off the table surely we will never get a different deal as we have no negotiation position?

  2. If we don't leave now after this whole debacle will we ever be listened to again by the EU as we will have no negotiating power?

OlgaArsenievnaOleinik · 13/03/2019 06:48

Logo - you don't sound stupid at all.

  1. the EU has said there will be no further negotiation on the Withdrawal Agreement. Mrs May signed up to it after lengthy and intense negotiations. Parliament voted it down and the EU won't negotiate further on the WA regardless of whether UK votes down no deal.

  2. We leave the EU by automatic operation of law (think that's the phrasing) on 29th March because that's what our MPs voted for 2 years ago. No further action required - we're out. Unless we ask the EU for an extension (and they can say no) or TMay revokes Article 50.

That's my understanding anyway.

OlgaArsenievnaOleinik · 13/03/2019 06:51

It's worth stating that the EU want a deal - they want to continue trading with us. They'd be (mostly) delighted if the wealthy UK decided to remain. It's in our power to stop Brexit and remain a rich partner in the world's biggest trading bloc.

Logoplanter · 13/03/2019 07:31

Thank you Olga Smile

This is useful on The Guardian:
www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2019/mar/12/how-did-your-mp-vote-in-the-march-brexit-votes#table

You can see exactly how each MP voted, together with whether their constituency was leave or remain.
I was surprised to see the number of remain constituencies who voted against the deal.

Troels · 13/03/2019 07:58

I think they are just trying to stop the whole thing.
But if they do take no deal off the table, we have no hope in hell of bargaining with the EU and may as well just bend over.
Who knows how much they will be charging us each week while negotiations rage on, it's a bloody nightmare.

TalkinPaece · 13/03/2019 09:13

You cannot take "no deal" off the table
without putting a deal there
how hard is that to understand

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 13/03/2019 09:14

The thing is that for many MPs this is a no win situation. There are definitely a significant percentage that want a no deal hard Brexit but there is also a percentage that don't want to leave at all.

Imnotswallowingthat · 13/03/2019 09:56

No deal is the default position, the vote in the commons tonight is absolutely meaningless. They can vote that they don't want a no deal scenario but unless they come up with something else that they can all agree on then that is exactly what is going to happen whether they like it or not.

I have today declared myself an independent nation. I just think it is the best thing I can do.
