I wanted to ask anyone who knows how feasible it is to change shifts or departments permanently?

Are jobs advertised internally for internal applicants, I don't mean to swap shifts about as one offs, I mean getting a new job internally with different hours or a different department.

Yeah it's pretty easy.I worked their for a week and when on a walk around the store during training was told this is x he/she started off in such department, moved to x then moved to y.

ShesABelter · 12/03/2019 19:19

Apologies I used the incorrect their argh.

DeadCertain · 12/03/2019 19:21

Advertised internally at our place (notices are put above our clocking in machine) - there was a job advertised in our department for more hours than I currently did so I approached my manager and asked that mine were increased to that on the advert and he issued me with a new contract.

You can also check "inside move" I believe.

Nothing to lose by approaching your manager - not sure when your "be your best" week is either but that's another chance to chat about options I think. I have only worked there for 6 months so haven't seen this in action - ours starts next week.

I used to. I was assaulted on the way home from a shift, asked to change a shift and they told me where to go. Found it an awful company to work for.

ssd · 12/03/2019 19:28

Why is it awful?
Does anyone work in grocery and do stock replenishment?

OP posts:
ssd · 12/03/2019 19:28

Sorry but what is 'inside move'

OP posts:
DeadCertain · 12/03/2019 19:30

www.insidemove.co.uk

Thanks, I put in my postcode but there's nothing within 50 miles of me even though there's a good amount of stores around including the superstores, I just thought there would be more vacancies than that internally.

There tend to be hours available on other departments in our store - for example some of my colleagues are now till - trained so do their hours in our department followed by some on the tills. I'd just ask your manager what opportunities are available.

ssd · 12/03/2019 19:55

I need more hours or I'll need to leave and I'm not sure how long it'll take to get them

OP posts:
ssd · 12/03/2019 20:12

Sorry to be so full of questions but how long do I need to be in the job before I could apply to change shifts or departments

OP posts:
ssd · 12/03/2019 20:14

Thanks dead, I guess it just applies how big your store is as to other vacancies or do they advertise vacancies in your area internally

OP posts:
DeadCertain · 12/03/2019 20:22

I don't know how long you need to be in it but I approached my manager about more hours after about 4 months (have only been there almost 6 months). Won't do you any harm at all to ask I wouldn't think.

Our store isn't large but as I said I have noticed internal vacancies are put up as notices above the clocking in machine or on the door that leads to the canteen etc. Wouldn't do you any harm to keep an eye out for job adverts for your store either I'd not think advertised externally and, if you see one that offers what you want, ask whether or not you could apply.

DeadCertain · 12/03/2019 20:24

Perhaps worth keeping an eye on Yammer too for your store and region.

ssd · 12/03/2019 20:25

Yeah I'll do that. Do you have any idea what a trading assistant does?

OP posts:
ssd · 12/03/2019 20:26

Sorry is yammer a website, am old and a bit thick 😁

OP posts:
ssd · 12/03/2019 20:29

I just googled yammer, not great at social media not too sure about it

OP posts:
DeadCertain · 12/03/2019 20:30

I think that it's mainly replenishment but not too sure; I work in the online department.

Eyre89 · 12/03/2019 20:31

Trading assistant is like replen, till everything really.

Tell your manager you'd be willing to help cover other stores if they need help and you can travel to them?

ssd · 12/03/2019 20:32

I thought so, hope its not too much heavy lifting I'm not that strong. I'm hoping I can change departments to something less physical

OP posts:
legolimb · 12/03/2019 20:32

I used to work for sainsburys 20 years ago and found it easy to change departments and hours. However it was a large store and there were more staff back then.

ssd · 12/03/2019 20:33

Covering other stores is a good idea, I don't drive so I'll need to checkout which ones I could get to

OP posts:
dragonflyinn10 · 12/03/2019 20:35

See if the stores got any overtime on other departments
