Have you ever left a UTI/kidney infection untreated? How long for?

I’ve had a UTI that was treated with antibiotics last week. The symptoms mostly went away, until last night when they came back with a vengeance.

I’ve woken up today with all the symptoms of a UTI again, but also pretty awful back pain. It feels like bad period cramps but I already had my period last week.

I know back pain is an early sign of a kidney infection, but I haven’t got a fever or any of the other signs (no flu like symptoms etc).

My problem is, we’re going away tonight to Prague for 5 nights and I’ve not been able to snatch a GP appt today.

I’m downing cystitis relief drinks and dosing up on pain killers, and that’s making it bearable - if this turns out to be another infection, do you think I can leave it untreated with antibiotics until I’m home?

Go to a walk in centre. I left one untreated as I couldn’t get a GP appointment (NHS in Manchester is not good). It was terrible, I couldn’t regulate my temperature, couldn’t keep any food or water down, was sweating like mad. It could ruin your holiday if you leave it untreated.

Ivy44 · 12/03/2019 13:04

The antibiotics will start working straight away.

Looneytune253 · 12/03/2019 13:05

Oh dear me. Don’t leave it!! I have had kidney infections following on from uti and both time was hospitalised. You don’t wanna get ill when you’re away. It’s horrendous enough at home. Go to walk in ASAP

If I don’t have things like a temp/chills/flu symptoms etc, could it still be a kidney infection?

Don’t leave it. They can get nasty very quickly and at worst lead to sepsis. You need a longish course if possible to try eliminate all the infection. A short course suppresses the infection only for it to often reappear a week or so after you finish them.

I have chronic cystitis from an infection that wasn’t treated for long enough. It went on for 5 years before I saw one of the uk’s leading consultants in chronic uti. I’ve been on daily double strength antibiotics since last Oct trying to get shut of the sodding thing.

Please take it seriously and get seen before you go. Would hate anyone to end up in the state I’m in.

A week or so as the symptoms were just niggles not that painful .

Woke up one morning In agony , it had turned in sepsis , emergency operation and 2 further operations to get me semi right , still have a under functioning kidney 2 years later . I went from being well to being nearly dead over night .

Go to a walk in centre now

OddestSock · 12/03/2019 14:10

My doctor did a telephone assessment and prescribed antibiotics that way. I'd already been on a short course of them the week before (also a telephone assessment), but it came back. They were quite happy to do it over the phone. Check to see if thats an option with your GP. Don't leave it untreated

Hiphopopotamus · 12/03/2019 14:12

Please go to a walk in/phone 111 for an emergency appointment. I tried flushing away a uti, which quickly became a kidney infection and by the time I got to hospital was full blown sepsis. Please don’t leave it.

Byrytrain · 12/03/2019 14:13

Don't leave it untreated. I've once lay on the floor in my own vomit unable to move an inch without feeling collapsey from a really bad kidney infection. They can get nasty very quickly.

Pinkiii · 12/03/2019 14:53

Please don’t leave it untreated. I had symptoms of a uti that went away after a couple of days and thought i was in the clear, a week later i got the most horrific kidney infection ( with a newborn).

Also i found normal UTI antibiotics didnt clear up my kidney infection properly and i had another bout of kidney infection and had to get sringer painkillers.

Wheretheresawill1 · 12/03/2019 15:01

Yes I ended up in hospital recently for 2 weeks with pyelonephritis and sepsis

butternutsquashing · 12/03/2019 15:23

Did you have a fever etc? @wheretheresawill1

OP posts:
Byrytrain · 12/03/2019 15:30

Don't base it off fever or not, try a walk in or 111, explain the situation. Last thing you want is it going south incredibly quick on holiday, let them judge if it's back.

tectonicplates · 12/03/2019 15:51

It's definitely possible to have UTIs without fevers or flu-like symptoms. Get yourself to a drop- in clinic asap.

inthekitchensink · 12/03/2019 17:40

I had a UTI that just felt a bit uncomfortable for a week or so & I left it as wasn’t sore, til one night I woke up in pain & ended up with sepsis in intensive care from a kidney infection. Nearly 20 years later I have chronic fatigue & a fucked immune system so PLEASE don’t be stupid like me and go get it treated now

shuttersaregreen · 12/03/2019 17:43

I have had a kidney infection following a UTI , it was absolute hell. I really advise you try to get antibiotics before you go.

EduCated · 12/03/2019 17:47

I left mine until I ended up in A&E at 3am vomiting uncontrollably and needing fluids and AB drip, and anti-emetics to keep me from starting vomiting again. I was off work for two weeks. I didn’t have a noticeable fever. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Is there a walk-in centre within any reasonable distance?

MigGril · 12/03/2019 17:47

It is also possible it's something else, I had UTI last September treated with antibiotics. Kept coming back, with back pain. I had a painful ovarian cyst, I've had cysts before but didn't know that they could present as UTI's until I got this one.

Get it checked out flying with something like this could be quite dangerous.

Missingstreetlife · 12/03/2019 17:48

You can sometimes treat a simple uti yourself but a kidney infection is potentially dangerous. What do 101say? You won't enjoy trip and flight will be horrible. I would get antibiotics to have on standby and take if needed, or as advised. Otherwise you'll end up in foreign a and e

CluedoAddict · 12/03/2019 17:49

I know it's extreme but my lovely Nan died from an untreated water infection. It led to pneumonia and she passed away.

Missingstreetlife · 12/03/2019 17:50

111 sorry.

7Pip · 12/03/2019 17:51

I'd go to hospital in Prague to be honest. Have you got the E111 card or whatever it is?

7Pip · 12/03/2019 17:55

I left mine a week before going this time last year. Such a pain in the ass trying to get a GP appointment here. It was a lot of pain and discomfort. You might actually be pleasantly surprised at the standard of medical care you'll receive outside of the UK.

EduCated · 12/03/2019 17:56

I’d be wary of insurance and whether this would be classed as a pre-existing/undeclared issue.

Yumsnet · 12/03/2019 17:58

Go to a walk in centre if you can.

I ended up with an abcess on one of my kidneys. Think I was lucky, hearing about PP's & sepsis.
