Hi!

I've just finished Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials and now I'm at a loss as to what to listen to next.

Does anyone have any Fantasy recommendations?

Thank you

The Name of the Wind

I've never read Philip Pullman so dont know if its similar type of fantasy but that is my favourite book ever

Well, depends if you like huge books!
I'm relistening to the Storm light series by Brandon Sanderson.

Kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss.
Not quite fantasy, more magical realism is the Rivers of London series. By Ben Aaronovich. Also excellent, and very funny.

Snap. Name of the wind is book one of the kingkiller chronicles.

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

I second the Storm Light Archives by Brandon Sanderson.

I really liked the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson so I'll give Stormlight Archives ago. I just wish he was further on in the series.

Name of the wind looks good so I'll have a look to.
Wheel of time looks like it'll keep me occupied for a while!

If you are on Reddit there is a storm light Subreddit which Brandon Sanderson posts on. He is giving updates on book 4. I think coming out next year.

I think I'm going to have to give up on Stormlight, I'm not liking the narrator. He doesn't seem to have much pace in his voice and his voice seems to go up at the end of a sentence.

Oh no he does Wheel of Time as well. Maybe I'll have to persevere with him

I loved the Kingkiller Chronicles. Also Mythago Wood and anything by Ursula le Guin.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/03/2019 18:51

Or how about the Warlord Trilogy by Bernard Cornwall?

Valkarie · 14/03/2019 18:53

I consider the wheel of time books to be hours of my life I regret deeply. I should have done something more interesting like stare at a blank wall instead. If you try and don't like then give up quickly as it doesn't improve. Try Terry Pratchett instead.

dun1urkin · 14/03/2019 18:56

I’m on the Kingkiller chronicles at the moment, and am enjoying the talespinning.
Not a patch on Dark Materials imo, but very enjoyable nonetheless

meepmoop · 14/03/2019 19:11

I love Bernard Cromwell I've pretty much read most of them. Haven't read Sharpe though.

I'll give the Kingkiller Chronicles a go. Haven't heard of the others but will give them a look

Valkarie - that doesn't sound good, sounds like if I don't like the narrator I wont get very far.

Another vote for Rivers of London, and the Kingkiller chronicles are brilliant (apart from the huuuuge length of time the third/fourth audiobook devoted to a man expositing how very good at sex he is and how grateful is his female partner) but it's time Patrick Rothfuss got his finger out and wrote the last book.

I like Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Neil Gaiman's American Gods (also Stardust and Neverwhere), and The Watchmaker of Filigree Street.

Some Terry Pratchetts are great - after he got into his stride, but before the Alzheimers got him. Witches Abroad is a good one to start with. Give the Long Earth series a miss if it's fantasy you're after.

For non-fiction I recently listened to two excellent books: A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived by Adam Rutherford, and Tamed by Alice Roberts, both read by the authors.

Jfw82 · 14/03/2019 21:29

James Maxwell's Evermen cycle. 4 books starting with Enchantress. Recently relistened through them all as I enjoy them so much or
David Eddings perhaps The Elenium (starting with the diamond throne)

Newuseroftheweek · 18/03/2019 22:47

Oh I forgot about that silly section in the last Kingkiller book in the fantasy sex bit. I think I literally gave up and just jumped forward a few chapters to get past it! I'm not even sure what the point of it was.

1vandal2 · 18/03/2019 22:54

Name of the wind is good but we've been waiting on the third book in the series for years so i wouldn't start that if you're happy to be unsatisfied the story isn't finished.
Some of my favourites at the moment are Shayne Silvers- nate temple series, melissa mcphail - a pattern of shadow and light series that is almost finished. Very long books. S m reine descent series and then all the others set in that world. Absolute mind blowingness goes on

ladybird69 · 20/03/2019 22:45

My daughter and I shared the skullduggery pleasant series, looking at the cover I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but it’s a great read definitely recommend. In fact I’m off to try and find my copies out to reread 😊
