What age does a baby become a toddler?

I don't mean just when people call their children their babies (Like a 4 year old)
I mean literallly, what age does a baby become a toddler?

1, or when they start to toddler I guess!

Astrid0208 · 11/03/2019 20:22

To toddle, stupid phone!

SoyDora · 11/03/2019 20:23

Well I suppose literally, it should be when they start to ‘toddle’ (i.e. walk). However as some babies walk at 7-8 months that seems a bit ridiculous.
I don’t think there is a defined cut off point though. Mine both started walking at 12 months and I probably called them toddlers from then onwards.

18 months

gamerchick · 11/03/2019 20:24

When they're 1 isn't it? When on proper meals and all that?

But you could say 18 months.... When you stop counting their age in months....

KateMadikane · 11/03/2019 20:24

Infant - under 12 months
Toddler -12 to 36 months

Noonooyou · 11/03/2019 20:28

Thanks :) I find it interesting. I work in childcare and it's interesting how many of my friends refer to their charges differently. I guess I've often gone with when they start walking but I've had some walk at 8 months and others at 18 months! Both of which seemed too early/ too late to refer as toddler. I think I am sort of a 16 month ish cut off but wanted to see what others thought.

We were taught 12 months to 36 months in Child development regardless of whether or not they were walking. So once they are three they are no longer toddlers.

SurgeHopper · 11/03/2019 20:31

Hard to tell. Its not just when they start toddling

SweetieJar · 11/03/2019 20:31

I know that you're aware that 36 months = 3 years. Apologies for wording that badly.

caffeinebuzz · 11/03/2019 20:52

IME most don't seem like toddlers yet by 12 months, but they all do before 18 months.

DinosApple · 11/03/2019 21:06

DD1 walked early and looked like a walking baby, so I reckon around the 12-18 month mark for toddler. I'd had another by that stage and the difference was obviously huge. On the other hand other people's 18 month olds -especially now I'm a few years past that stage- look like babies...

My DC are still known as The Babies when talking to DH... they're 8 & 9 now. Grin

That's a really long winded way of saying no idea OP... Sorry Grin.

ChanklyBore · 11/03/2019 21:16

They become a toddler somewhere in the two months following the 18 month mark. They are all different but by the time they are closer to the second birthday than the first they are toddlers. You stop counting their age in months. The weight gain slows dramatically. Walking comes on in leaps and bounds, for late and early walkers alike. It’s round this point that concern is raised if they aren’t walking so they are definitely considered to be at the toddler stage. The language spurt is about to start. 18-24 is the last clothing size in the baby section. And it feels like a new phase. So 18 months but up to 20 months depending on the child.

Chocolateheaven123 · 11/03/2019 21:20

I've always thought toddler was 12-36 months?

I refer to my son as a toddler sometimes and he's just turned 2.

Jackshouse · 11/03/2019 21:20

I would say at one. My DD is a couple of months of 3 but I would say she hasn’t been toddler in terms of developmental for a few months.

She is a tall child so was out of ‘baby’ clothes very early. She is just about to go into 4 to 5 year old clothes.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2019 21:22

It’s a great word ‘toddle’ isn’t it? I sometimes ‘toddle off to bed’ - I am quite a bit older than 3 !! Perhaps it’s a state of mind Grin

BearSoFair · 11/03/2019 21:30

I think I started calling mine toddlers at around 12-15 months. Feel like it was definitely before 18 months.

TeacupDrama · 11/03/2019 21:37

my idea

0-12 months a baby
1-3 years toddler
3-6 little child ie nursery and reception maybe Y1 (P1-2 in scotland)
7-11 or 12 a child depending on when reach puberty basically end of primary school
13+ teenager
16-20 young adult (overlaps with teenager)
20+ adult

Dongdingdong · 12/03/2019 08:58

Agree with Teacup except I’d say 13-17 teenager, 18+ adult.

brookshelley · 12/03/2019 09:05

To me:

0-12 months infant
12-36 months toddler

However
0-18/24 months baby - to me baby is wider than infant but narrower than toddler.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 12/03/2019 10:10

I think 36 months is generous! I would say toddler is 1-2 years, after that a child.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/03/2019 10:17

I always think about 15 months or so, when they’re usually toddling around quite steadily (apart from my DD who bum shuffled until nearly 18 months).
