Does with dry, thick frizzy hair not shampoo their hair?

I have very thick, very dry, frizzy hair and a dry scalp.

I've experimented with various routines and feel what works best is a once a week washing of my hair (which I've always done anyway), with conditioner for dry/damaged hair/leave-in deep conditioner on the lower three quarters of my hair, leave for 5 mins, rinse with lukewarm water and done (no shampoo) - this seems to help with the incredibly dry, feeling. My hair is so thick that it doesn't get greasy very easily (only on day 5 or 6 post-wash usually)

If I use shampoo (even the ones without sulfates, made specifically for dry hair), it just dries my hair out a lot.

Is your hair curly? The curly girl method recommends just what you are doing. Dosent work for me though. My hair gets clogged up with the product I need to control it.

I did do "no-poo" for a while but I had dandruff and struggled to deal with it so went to a "low-poo" shampoo and that's fine for me (yes to carrots, smart scalp) . I shampoo about 1.5 times a week on average but condition daily and use a little bit of coconut oil sometimes.

My hair is so thick that when I went to get it cut last week, the hairdresser said she'd never seen thicker!

Like yours, my hair doesn't get greasy easily. I've also got a very dry/itchy scalp. I actually shampoo my hair a few times a week, but that's because I can't stand knowing that it's not "clean". Best conditioner I've found is a John Frieda leave-in spray conditioner for damaged hair.

I switched to E45 shampoo and it’s been great, my scalp is fine, my hair is lighter and I don’t get greasy roots. I’ve tried a few other shampoos and I get the dry ends/ greasy roots mess back

I stopped using shampoo in the New Year. Greasy at first but has sorted itself out now- much thicker and generally nicer, can go longer between washes.

Really sounds like your hair would benefit from the curly girl method, whether it's curly or not. There's a very informative and active group on Facebook if you're on there. Try leaving some conditioner in next time you wash itto seeif your hair likes it.

I wash mine with shampoo weekly (post swimming, so I do need shampoo to get the chlorine out). The rest of the week I use conditioner alone (I use Aveda Dry Remedy, doubt it much matters). I do wash my hair most days because mine is curly and gets really frizzy when I sleep on it, it needs some water to refresh the curls.

Sashkin, if it's long enough you can "pineapple" it at night, ie put it in a loose ponytail on top of your head so you don't actually sleep on it and the curls don't frizz or get squashed.

Another curly girl here. If you shampoo, use one with no sulphates, and afterwards leave in a mix of conditioner and gel, then air-dry or blow dry on low heat. If you hair feels crunchy afterwards because of the gel, scrunch out the crunch. The gels helps the curls hold their shape instead of frizzing.

Use a conditioner without silicone (any ingredient ending in -cone) because it builds up and pulls your curls straight and then you have to use shampoos with sodium lauryl sulphate to wash out the silicone, but that also strips out the natural oils and makes your hair dry and frizzy.

If your hair frizzes between shampoos, wet it a bit, mix some conditioner and gel with water and then scrunch it in and that refreshes the curls.

Lesser I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work for me - I don’t know if it’s because my hair isn’t long enough (it’s shoulder length) or because I move around a lot in my sleep, but if I pineapple my hair most of it is loose by morning. I put it in two french braids, but I still get a sort of halo of frizz so it looks much better after a quick wash.

I stopped shampooing many years ago. I've shampooed by mistake when I picked up the wrong bottle a couple of times. My hair is like straw if I use shampoo.
I do a conditioner wash, then use one for dry and damaged hair after. It's much better.
My hair never gets greasy, and products don't seem to build up in it.
