Would you buy a house that smelled of dog?

We have sold our property and of these we have viewed to buy there is one that ticks all of of the boxes in terms of size, location and layout.

However the vendors have 5 small dogs and when we viewed there was a noticable smell of dog throughout, which theyd also attempted to mask with candles etc. Would this put you off or is it redeemable? Assuming we would need to recarpet the full house but am worried that wouldnt resolve it.

Anyone purchased a house with similair?

It's 95% gone I'd say. Still got to get rid of one carpet and then I think we will be sorted. It's been a big job it was absolutely gross.

cliffdiver · 11/03/2019 21:06

We did once.

Never again.

We had to rip up every carpet and scrub numerous times. It was grim.

nombrecambio · 11/03/2019 21:10

We bought a house that was full (and I mean FULL) of cat piss & shit. It was a bargain.

We had to rip everything up and clean, repaint, change some floorboards, change doors, sand and repaint woodwork...

This was much much worse than just smelling of dog.

The smell can be eliminated. It just depends how much work you want to do.

Idontmeanto · 11/03/2019 21:15

We had to work quite hard to get rid of the smell of cigarettes in our place, but new carpets a scrub and fresh paint was worth it.

PirateWeasel · 11/03/2019 21:18

Yep, we bought a house that had five dogs in it before. First thing we did was rip out all carpets, bicarb of soda over all the stained patches on the floorboards just to make sure there was no damp, put extra fat underlay down and new carpets throughout. Aired the place daily for a fortnight before we moved in, while we decorated. We were still finding dog hair in the weirdest places for months afterwards! The bath waste was also completely trashed from where they'd washed the dogs in the bath and it had got clogged up with hair. Fortunately we were ripping out and replacing the bathroom too so it was solved that way. It was a lot of work but you'd never know a dog had ever lived here now!

Butteredghost · 11/03/2019 22:41

Surely most of the smell is in their furniture and the carpets. It's annoying to replace the carpets but you usually would do that anyway moving in to a new place if the carpets are old.

GunpowderGelatine · 11/03/2019 22:44

We did, but we didn't even recapped we bought a pet hoover and got carpet cleaners in. It did whiff at first though

GunpowderGelatine · 11/03/2019 22:44

*recarpet

starzig · 11/03/2019 22:48

I would try and get money off and explain why. Just account for the fact the whole house will need stripped when making an offer.

CurbsideProphet · 11/03/2019 22:49

We did last year. All carpets had to go immediately and entire house scrubbed and redecorated from top to bottom before we moved in. There were even dog and cat hairs in the kitchen cupboards.

We're planning to replace kitchen / downstairs flooring / bathroom over the next few years. I dread the hairs that will start floating around!

I'm allergic and couldn't help with ripping up the carpet because I was wheezing too much. I think some dog owners just don't notice the hairs and smell? Despite everything we did I was paranoid about the house smelling for the first couple of months!

HotChocolateLover · 12/03/2019 06:42

Our house absolutely reeked of dog and we didn’t notice at viewings because the vendors had used glade plugins and hidden the dog 🤦‍♀️ Once we’d de-flead twice, used to Carpet cleaner twice and literally scrubbed the carpet in the front room we were fine!

AgentProvocateur · 12/03/2019 06:46

I did once. Never again. Even after getting rid of the carpets and painting, I could smell it for months.

greenelephantscarf · 12/03/2019 06:48

only if I planned to replace carpet& underlay and spent a serious amount of time scrubbing the walls in dog height.

Halo84 · 12/03/2019 06:53

Ozone shock treatments are all the rage here. It takes 32-48 hours, and the home should be empty. You do have to research if anything in the house will react with the shock treatment.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/03/2019 06:56

I don't think you'd need to replace the carpets. Get them steam cleaned. The dogs are gone, the sofas, etc are gone. Carpets are clean. It'll be fine.

brighton2016 · 12/03/2019 06:57

Yes and have done! Took a few weeks to
Scrub the place, new floor, new carpets, painted walls ceilings and smell
Eventually went!

hdh747 · 12/03/2019 07:00

I would have no choice but to rip out the carpets as my hubby is allergic to dogs so I would factor it in the offer. Don't see why you can't.

Ragwort · 12/03/2019 07:05

Probably not if I am honest, is it really the only house you have seen that you like? When I look at houses on line I check the photos carefully for signs of pets. Am surprised people don’t remove pet food bowls from photos, but at least it stops me wasting my time Grin.

PrawnCruise · 12/03/2019 07:16

I'm not sure. We bought a car 5 years ago which had a bit of a doggy odor. They fully valeted it and it's been done a few times since and awe still get a whiff of dog. Specially when it's been standing in the sun for a while.

claragolightly · 12/03/2019 11:52

Our house stank of cigarettes when we bought it. Decorating and cleaning has got rid of it. It took a while though!

MrsPerfect12 · 12/03/2019 13:31

Make sure you get a radiator brush to get out the dog fur, that could stink too.

TheViceOfReason · 12/03/2019 14:19

A bit of a dog smell is one thing - and as long as you can factor in replacing carpets / curtains / painting, i'd not be put off.

I looked at a house a few years ago and the dog smell was overwhelming (and i'm a horsey / doggy / country person). Literally took your breath away. We walked away from the house as the smell would never have gone unless you'd ripped EVERYTHING out. It was horrendous.

Chottie · 12/03/2019 15:04

No, never.

MaMaMaMySharona · 12/03/2019 16:16

Definitely worried you're trying to purchase my mum's house! She has 4 dogs and has been trying to sell for a very long time (although no one has ever mentioned dog smells).
