Hurt wrist - get it checked?

Name changed because I'm embarrassed!

I slipped on a muddy, sloped path last Wednesday - fell backwards and would have landed on my backside had I not stuck my hand out and landed pretty much all of my weight through that instead. It hurt at the time but was not excruciating. I had to remove my rings as it was swelling a bit. No major/obvious bruising (except my pride).

It's still swollen, mainly around the base of my thumb, my thumb and index finger, still can't get my wedding ring back on. I can move my fingers but still very painful to move my thumb and can't grip with that hand. I've also just knocked it against the high chair which is giving me nervy pain shooting up my thumb.

Would you get it looked at? I feel a bit daft about rocking up to the doctors because I fell over nearly a week ago, but I would have hoped it'd be a bit better by now.

Yeah I'd get it checked - that kind of impact can cause scaphoid fractures.

isseywithcats · 11/03/2019 19:18

definitely get it checked out i fell landed on my wrist and i had fractured a bone especially as its swelling

Wolfcub · 11/03/2019 19:20

Another one saying potential for a scaphoid fracture - I fell in different circumstances but a similar mechanic and you describe similar symptoms. Best to get it checked by a professional

We have walk-in minor injuries unit I'd probably go to if it were me. Shouldn't still be swollen now.

update us when you find something out?

clumsy19 · 11/03/2019 19:55

There is a minor injuries unit not too far away. I might try there tomorrow once DC1 is in school.

Will they be a bit Hmm about me going in so long after the actual injury?

Won't be that unusual to turn up late. After all, you thought it would get better & it hasn't seemed to. That's not unreasonable.

It probably is just swollen or self-healing damage to ligaments. But you can't know without xray.

If it makes you feel better, I finally took DD to the doctor's (then A&E) a week after she'd fallen and hurt her wrist (turned out not to be broken) - the pain hadn't gone away, so there was the possibility it was broken. You haven't waited quite as long (and nor is there a child involved).

Pixel99 · 11/03/2019 20:52

Can you go tonight to an out of hours or A&E? Another vote for possible scaphoid fracture.
I broke mine falling off a step ladder whilst painting. I was able to carry on (although v. painful) and I had to drive home. Went to doctors the next day who correctly diagnosed the scaphoid and went off to A&E (DF drove this time). I was in plaster for 7 weeks.

clumsy19 · 11/03/2019 21:14

I can't go tonight - DH on a night shift and the DC are asleep!

My DP slipped on ice (few years back now) , & he didn't have any pain till about a week later his back & leg was hurting he didn't know what it was at first, then it clicked must been when he slipped.. He didn't go to the doctors (know what men are like) but tbh it went within a few days , so was probably just the bruising comming out inside or something. Had no swelling though.. I'm sure it could be similar, maybe best to get it checked if you worried about it though

Miljah · 11/03/2019 22:06

If your scaphoid is broken, as long as you don't do a heavy weights session tonight 😊 you won't harm it if you don't go to MI til tomorrow.

Seven weeks in plaster implies a healing issue! 10 days should do it.

One 'good' thing about waiting a day or two is that a fracture across the neck of the scaphoid may be more obvious. Non- medical people are often shocked to discover that not all fractures come with neon arrows, and scaphoid are notorious for not necessarily being obviously fractured immediately after injury, so even 'hmm, not sure's get a plaster on!

Pixel99 · 11/03/2019 22:16

Miljah - you are probably right. I broke a different bone in the same arm a couple of years ago and it came up when I went for my follow up. If I remember correctly it was more of a banana shape than a coffee bean (either that or the other way around). I was more pre occupied with hoping that latest break didn't require surgery. Blush

feelingsinister · 11/03/2019 22:28

Another vote for scaphoid fracture and I agree with the PP that said it's hard to diagnose. It should be fine to wait for tomorrow.

Pixel99 · 11/03/2019 22:38

I only thought to suggest going tonight if possible to get some support on your wrist. Good luck tomorrow.

clumsy19 · 12/03/2019 14:05

I've been x rayed and they can't see a break but have given me a brace/splint thing to wear until it stops hurting and want to re do the x ray on Saturday to double check.

In a nutshell- scaphoid fractures aren't always obvious, but they're taken more seriously because the scaphoid only has a blood supply to one end, so, very occasionally, a fracture isolates one end, so, in the unlikely event of a non-union fracture, that end necrosis ( bone death due to no blood supply).

It's rare but a bit of faff at this end can prevent that.

Pixel99 · 13/03/2019 00:40

Glad it isn't broken OP and I hope the brace gives you some support.
