How much would you expect to pay for a new timber front door??

It needs to be a decent timber front door that matches a regency house - so six panels, nice door furniture, solid modern locks.
The surround needs changing too because it’s all UPVC - pretty horrible.

The original stained glass window light above needs preserving (it’s in a upvc sealed unit at the moment)

How much do you reckon?

A London joinery from just quoted......

4K
!

I know we could get a salvage one for around £300 - but we do need someone to can w the surround and make it secure in one day....

Ha! Yes, we replaced a horrible pvc door with a solid wood one (half glass) and it was considerably less than that because we did it all ourselves. As in, sourced door, frame, timber for the return of about a foot, glass and hardware all separately then employed a carpenter. Think it was about £600 vs the £3.5k quotation...

BigBairyHollocks · 10/03/2019 20:44

I would expect to pay about £1300 for something like this.

Tofslan · 10/03/2019 20:45

Ah...

We’ve been quoted £3.5k by glaziers for similar... includes submitting for some sort of certificate as in Conservation Area - am sure that’s probably simple enough to do ourselves too if I look into it.

So, where did you source door and frame from @Danglingmod???

Let me guess... London Door Company?

So expensive but obviously lovely

Danglingmod · 10/03/2019 21:14

I think the door and frame was from Wayfair and the timber for everything else was our local hardware store.

Gibble1 · 10/03/2019 21:39

Our neighbour did our front door lots of years ago for £600. He’s just done the back door for us (18 months ago) for £700. That includes a solid hardwood door, frame all door furniture and the fitting. Not London though.

Ouch :

@lauriefairycake - not got their quote through yet but from your comment I assume will be similar

So much money

Thing is we’re quite handy but for a front door it really needs to be secure on the same day

I was going to guess £300, that's what we paid for a solid wood external back door last summer plus £60 fitting.

SuziQ10 · 10/03/2019 22:39

About £1,500 is what we paid for ours. It's a nice thick wood door with a small stained glass window. Also in London. A local handy man fitted it & we paid him £180 including putting on extra safety bolts, chain and letterbox protection thing. No idea if that was too much or about right. But we'd just been burgled.. they'd taken a sledge hammer to our old door.. so this was an urgent job.

greenwhitefrog · 10/03/2019 23:18

I paid about £2.5k for new front door with glass panels in the door and above, matching surround and fitting/hardware. It's a really solid door and so much better quality than off the shelf doors, I'm really pleased with it (although did do a double take at the quote Shock). I'm just outside London.

Before when I bought a door separately to the surround (to save money) the movement in the door was different to the surround so although it fitted perfectly to start with within a few months it was out of alignment and never fitted quite right.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 11/03/2019 15:12

We paid a similar amount to @greenwhitefrog - but our front door is a non-standard size (old house) so an off-the-peg door wasn't going to fit so we figured if we were going to have to spend a lot, we might as well go all-out with bespoke stained glass panel and transom. It still makes me happy every time I walk up the drive, and I know it's solid and secure. Hoping when we replace our back door it will be a bit more budget friendly though!
