Has anyone gone to the gp with a print out?

So post surgery pain. Been ongoing for 18 months. Sent to physio who had zero understanding of the surgery i had and therefore couldn’t understand my symptoms. Anyway I’ve just read a paper online and it matches perfectly. If your gp would you bothered if I walked in with the paper and say this is it!?

Why not, it can’t hurt. I have a chronic condition and am well on top of what’s going on regarding its treatment - a couple of times I’ve said to my consultant “I’ve been Doctor Googling and...”

In fact, I did this recently as I’d been having skin issues (relevant to my treatment as it can cause skin problems) and mentioned that I’d stopped using products with SLS in to see if things would improve. He wasn’t aware of how SLS can affect the skin, discussed what I knew and wrote down what I was doing and why in my notes. He was genuinely interested.

Yes, I did a few years ago - I'm as convinced as I possibly can be that I have an underactive thyroid. I printed out a list of symptoms, there are dozens of them, and I'd ticked all but about 2 or 3.

Doctor dismissed it completely, totally uninterested. I still haven't got anywhere.

I often cite Doctor Google when DM has appointments (this might be why her consultant referred to me as a rather assertive daughter Blush in his letter back to our GPGrin).

GP doesn't seem to mind and actually agreed to stop one of DM's tablets when I found proof they caused one of her more distressing symptoms and that they were not recommended for the over 85s.

Oh and if you ever watch GPs Behind Closed Doors, they are always printing off information about the conditions their patients are in with
I wonder at their cartridge costs for the year !

Ok I’ll take it in. If I’m honest I feel totally dismissed - as far as the physio was concerned it was in my head and then decided on hyper extension when pushed which does not match my symptoms. I’ve looked at British and American sites both of which agree that post operative pain is a possibly due to nerve damage and symptom match. The British one is what I was thinking of printing.

Thank you

Yes do it. Whenever I have a health issue I do so much research I end up knowing a lot about the possible conditions I might have. A few times I've mentioned things to GPs that they didn't know about and it turned out I was right! They often assume I've had medical training. I know I probably sound like some annoying know it all but it's really important to discuss your ideas with the doctors. Often they say to me "Well what do YOU think it is?" - I find most GPs are very open to listening to their patients ideas.

Yes i did

It was regarding my thyroid

I did quite a bit of research and went in there with a couple of a4 sheets

I obviously paraphrased it for him and walked out with the prescription i wanted

Its worth a try

I did too, regarding my thyroid too. List of typical symptoms all ticked plus the nice guidelines which they'd failed to follow a year previously when I first went in. Got my diagnosis in the end.

farmbelle · 10/03/2019 18:55

im a gp - i wouldn't mind at all, as long as we can discuss it both with open minds! (sometimes I've had people bring in almost witch craft like articles and not let me explain the made up science!)

Gingernaut · 10/03/2019 19:00

Yes.

I printed off surveys and information about ADD.
