If you were creating a house from scratch, what would you make sure it had?

We're currently converting a building into a house and it suddenly occurred to me that I should really think about all those little things that could perhaps be thought about and incorporated that would make life easier. It's prob a bit late to ask this question (rooms are built, plasterers are nearly done!) and, frankly, budget is beyond TIGHT but there might very well be simple /easy things that we are missing...

For example, I was just outside in our current garden and was thinking how I defo need to have decent storage for outside toys / furniture in the new place because they are all disgusting from being exposed all winter.

Don't get me wrong - we have been sort of thinking about this kind of stuff (eg we've incorporated a big porch / boot room with loads of storage for shoes, coats, book bags etc) but I just wondered if anyone had any more ideas?

Cheers

Might be a bit of a useless one. But when we night out house we have plug sockets everywhere and it's so bloody handy!

The best but is we have a couple of plug sockets that are near the ceiling in the bedrooms, so our TV is on the wall and the cables dont show at all. It's a God send!

winsinbin · 10/03/2019 11:15

I came on to say big utility or boot room with lots of storage.

An acquaintance of mine had a walk-in airing cupboard with hanging rails and room for free standing airers - I envied that.

Built in window seats with storage underneath if the size/shape of the room suits it.

winsinbin · 10/03/2019 11:15

That high plug idea is genius and I am going to do that next time I decorate.

Proper front hall or porch with enough space for 4 people to put on outdoor clothes and take off muddy boots. Kitchen with space for a dining table.

FaFoutis · 10/03/2019 11:17

No neighbours.

TSSDNCOP · 10/03/2019 11:17

It's the basics; sockets everywhere, chasing electrics up walls for lights in the right places, having plumbing laid in a way you can easily add on, outside taps, installing guttering so you can use the run off for the garden, having big enough storage and then adding just a bit more, solar panels and other environmentally friendly devices, having enough bin space and storage.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2019 11:18

Hot water tap in the kitchen

The previous owners of our house did that in every room (plus TV arials). There were 2 of them but there were 7 TVs. Why?

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2019 11:18

Actually do they need servicing or descaling? Might be wroth finding that out first

SwedishEdith · 10/03/2019 11:18

Sockets. Our house only has sockets on one wall in ever room Angry
Outside lights - front and back (neither here)
Outside tap (even tiny sink?) and outside socket
USB sockets now
Laundry chute/dumb waiter
Space to store all outdoor recycling bins

TapasForTwo · 10/03/2019 11:19

Storage space for coats and shoes/boots, at least 2 toilets/bathrooms, secure storage for garden stuff/bikes etc.

Bathroom storage for cleaning stuff/toiletries etc
Loads of power outlets
Loads of worksurface space in the kitchen. Loads of kitchen storage

Can you see a theme here?

twistable · 10/03/2019 11:19

A pantry. Favourite room in the house!

isabellerossignol · 10/03/2019 11:19

Energy efficiency, super low running costs.

A utility room.

longearedbat · 10/03/2019 11:20

I would love a walk in larder. We had one when I was a child. It was fully tiled in white and had a window. On the north side of the house so was cool. It would be lovely to have all the food shut away in one place, yet have enough room to actually see what you've got, without having to clear a cupboard out to get to the stuff at the back.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2019 11:22

Is a laundry chute as amazing as it sounds? I now aspire to that.

Tillypea · 10/03/2019 11:22

Having a utility room would be my dream Grin

Big kitchen diner rather than seperate dining room.

Understairs storage.

TemporaryPermanent · 10/03/2019 11:23

Outside tap
Every electric socket a double, and more of them than you'd think possible
Sash windows
Ikea narrow pull out larder
2 basket laundry cupboard next to the washing machine
Cutlery drawer next to the table so I don't have to get up if I drop my fork
Classic workflow kitchen - fridge, work surface, cooker, work surface if possible, sink, dishwasher
Single big sink rather than a 1.5 but that's because I use a washing up bowl - but it makes cleaning huge pans and handwashing clothes/babies much easier
Bidet
Glass doors to outside
So much light in the kitchen you don't have to turn on the lights when in winter
Everything set to family height not average height (family of beanpoles here)
spotlight arranged so I can read in the bath

We have all this except the bidet and the sash windows.

ideasofmarch · 10/03/2019 11:23

Porch & entrance hall with plenty of storage space for coats & shoes etc. And a loud doorbell.

A kitchen big enough for a table and chairs.

Massive utility room, with a door to the back garden and loads of space for clothes airer etc.

Many cupboards.

Proper gas central heating with an airing cupboard & hot water tank, none of that combi boiler malarkey.

Decent sized windows, not the poky ones you see so often now, that make a house look out of proportion and like a prison block.

At least two toilets.

Loads of electric sockets, more than you think you will need. Because you will need them.

ThatFalseEquivalenceTho · 10/03/2019 11:23

Upstairs laundry room (if I’m going all out, I’d have a giant walk in wardrobe with the washer/dryer in there. Saw it on TV and it looked amazing.)
Pantry
Boot room
USB sockets
Socks in places that are actually useful
More than one bathroom
Downstairs toilet

ScreamingValenta · 10/03/2019 11:23

Lots of storage.
Utility room.
Big, spacious hallway
Separate cloakroom off hallway for coats, shoes and bags.
Wall lights as well as ceiling lights for a cosy lighting option
Patio doors off one of the living areas for summer garden days

pisspawpatrol · 10/03/2019 11:23

A dressing area with good natural light.
A Laundry area with washing machine and plenty of room for drying so it doesn't clutter the house.
Possibly silly but somewhere for the cat's litter tray, that means litter doesn't get spread about the rest of the house!
A separate study so that a bedroom doesn't need to be lost to DH working from home once a week.

Fiontar649 · 10/03/2019 11:24

A cupboard that has an upright space for an ironing board, brooms and mops and a big enough space for the hoover. Somewhere to hang/hide coats and shoes. Space for bedding, spare duvets, heavier winter blankets when not in use.

Basically I want an Ikea house with everything hidden away in nifty storage

ThatFalseEquivalenceTho · 10/03/2019 11:24

Sockets* not socks Grin

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/03/2019 11:25

For me it would be built in storage. The type that is either hidden so blends in with walls or makes a statement. I hate things being on display that look untidy.
Things like dvds and other crap like the ironing board and vacuum cleaner.

Yes to plug sockets.

ScreamingValenta · 10/03/2019 11:26

I was laughing at Socks in places that are actually useful (guessed it was a typo). Handily placed inside all your shoes perhaps? Grin
