How much does your 8 week old/14lb baby eat?

Ds is 98th centile for height and weight. He is 8 weeks and over 14lb.

He takes roughly 7x 5oz bottles of cow and gate first milk per day. So 35oz, sometimes he has an extra 3-5oz if he needs it.

In his 6 week growth spurt he was taking 45oz some days.

How much does your similar sized baby take?

This might not be that helpful but at that age I wasn't really adding up what DS had. He was a big baby (and remains a big toddler!) and I just fed him on demand.

We seemed to fall into a 2 hourly routine with 5oz bottles so it sounds similar to what your DS is having. He'd always have two bottles during the night as well!

Did you ever try hungry baby formula @CalamityJune ?

No but I did go onto Comfort Milk from I think about 3 months as normal Aptamil seemed to give him a sore tummy. He had that until 6months.

Are you worried that you're not filling him up?

No, I can just sense a hungry day coming on. He's had a 3oz top up already today and am just wondering if there is anything I can do better.
He's been a bit unwell from over feeding in the past so I'm a bit anxious about the amount he eats.
I also have a tub of hungry baby in the cupboard and am wondering if one bottle of that per day might help him feel fuller for longer.

Dh and I are both tall and thin with massive appetites so I'm not hugely worried about that. It's more upsetting his tummy by pouring too much formula in (he'll take whatever he's offered).

Oh that's hard. I never had that with DS- he is a bottomless pit even now though! When he'd had enough of his bottle though he woukd purse his mouth shut and I couldn't get any more in if i'd tried!

No harm in trying it and seeing how he gets on?

bitchfromhell · 10/03/2019 09:34

Yes I think I'll try him with one at bedtime, he often sleeps through 8-5 but was starving at 3am today. Then had an extra top up at 5am, then his normal first breakfast at 7am. GrinThe little bugger is still fast asleep now though. Second breakfast will have to wait.

I've heard good things about comfort milk.

If he overfeeds he gets unsettled and continues to want to feed, I guess to try and settle his stomach. Kind of colicky symptoms but gets in a viscous circle of feeding, feeling rubbish, feeding to try and feel better. At least that's how it looks, I wish they could tell us Smile

I was always told 2/3 Oz per pound of their weight in a 24 hour period so sounds fine to me

bitchfromhell · 10/03/2019 15:01

@Avebury I read that too, but google tells me up to a max of 32oz. I know every baby is different but I wonder where we go from here, as he grows and needs more..

If you are worried about him over feeding can you try and stretch the feeds out even just by 20 mins or so each time by distracting him rather than instantly feeding him when he starts to seem hungry.
Hard I know with one so small.

Alyosha · 10/03/2019 15:47

Is he sucky rather than hungry? Could you try a dummy after a feed to see if that helps?

Flatwhite32 · 10/03/2019 16:03

7 month old DD is 15lbs something (shes just over 9th percentile) and she has the following:

Early morning: 5oz
Late morning: 6/7oz
Afternoon: 6/7oz
Early evening: 7oz
Sometimes later in the evening she'll have another 5oz bottle depending on what she has eaten. She is on solids now though, but still much prefers milk!

bitchfromhell · 10/03/2019 16:35

He has dummy too, genuine hunger I think. Although he's now missed a feed today as he slept through one so maybe I'll just keep on as we are for now.

@Flatwhite32 I wish he was old enough to add some solids. I think he'll be much happier for a bit of porridge when the time comes
