Any nurses about -icky looking skin around DD's grazed elbow

DD (5) grazed her elbow at school on Thursday and was patched up with a big plaster. The plaster came off yesterday and revealed what looks like a red, sore to touch, slightly 'shiny', flaky, scabbed surface. This morning, little red bumps have appeared all around the graze, covering quite a big area and it is sore, although not hot. I am freaking out a bit as she got an infection following sutures on her chin a few years ago which started off looking a bit like this and ended up needing a long course of strong antibiotics. She's had numerous grazes and scratches since, but none which have looked like this. GP tomorrow I am sitting on my hands not taking her to a OOH walk in centre ?

It doesn't look infected to me.

It almost looks like a reaction. Could she have been allergic to the plaster perhaps?

BoobiesToTheRescue · 10/03/2019 08:12

Is it hot or swollen?

Palominoo · 10/03/2019 08:13

Bathe in salt water, pat dry and let the air get to it and the rash will most likely be gone by tomorrow. I can't see any infection at the moment.

That looks like an allergy to me. Just keep an eye on it

Plaster allergy? Does it itch? Try piriton

WarmthAndDepth · 10/03/2019 08:42

Ahh... perhaps a plaster allergy. Not hot, but a little swollen. I'll try the bathing in salt water and keeping it in the air and seeing what happens. Thank you all!

Looks like an allergy to the plaster. I can get them, particularly if it’s a very sticky plaster, covers a large area or is left on for a quite a while. You can buy different ones I think they are called hypoallergenic or for sensitive skin. If it’s itchy try a topical cream rashes/itches.

Paediatric nurse here. It looks fine. Just keep it clean and keep an eye on it.

Much better after salt water soak, red dots still there but general redness and puffiness has subsided. It was one of those huge plastic plasters which seals on all sides (worn under toasty fleecy dog outfit for World Book Day, so perhaps a bit sweaty), which would account for the large area of redness. Will repeat later and keep an eye Smile
