Skateboard for a 5yr old

My DS has asked for a skateboard for his 5th birthday. Is that too young for him to have any chance of mastering it?! Any particular brand I should be looking out for, for a little learner?

My dc skate. I can ask them when they wake up.

I would speak to a skate shop to put one together, you ideally want really soft wheels as they will grip the surface better and allow better control of speed.

I'll ask DH when he gets in from work which he out in dad's skateboard

This shop in Bristol is brilliant. Tbey helped put together dcs 1st board. If you don't live anywhere near them you could still contact them / order online. The shop is run by passionate skaters.

Da was 7 or 8 when he got his but really using it more now, his is a D Street board, which he loves

Do you have an indoor skate park near you? Ours rent equipment out and will help teach too - an avenue worth pursuing to see if your ds likes it before buying?

Great suggestions, thanks! x

Decathlon provide great value. Get a 'proper' dual ended board with wooden deck. Avoid the cheapest one with plastic trucks though.

I can't see the average 5yo being able to do much with a skateboard, he's likely to get frustrated very quickly. Does he have a scooter?

VforVienetta · 10/03/2019 15:03

I literally just bought DS one yesterday for his 5th in a few weeks - a real cheapy for £14, but if he's keen we'll upgrade it to a decent one.
Got it from The Entertainer.
DS2 has amazing balance so I think he'll enjoy it. He also asked for one! I wouldn't get one for DS1 in a month of Sundays, it'd be his idea of hell.

Pennyboards seem good - mine both bought one with Christmas money, We got them much cheaper online at Sportsdirect. There is a Pennyboard website where you can choose the latest ones.

@cel983 he does have a scooter and is a real whizz on it. I don’t know if that relates to how easy he’d find skateboarding though...
