If you have hypothyroidism.....

...do you also get reactive hypoglycemia?

Posting here for traffic

Read with horror every post on the women's health experiences thread and noticed rather a lot of peeps ending up with a hypothyroid diagnosis despite bloods coming back as normal (in the uk).

I have a lot of the hypothyroid symptoms, main one being inability to lose weight despite a healthy diet and active lifestyle. PCOS was ruled out after a scan. Thyroid was ruled out after bloods. But, apparently what constitutes normal is up for debate internationally and i could quite see that i would be within uk normal, but ready to dip out at times of stress!

One thing i do get is reactive hypoglycemia (confirmed with exDHs type 1 diabetes kit). Obviously i watch my sugar intake, but even fruit, bread, rice and pasta can set me off so i keep that minimal too. NHS site says hypoglycemia like this is worrying in a non diabetic (i have been tested and not pre-diabetic) but i fail at getting doctors to take me seriously so cant be arsed chasing this up right now - i've been the same since my teens, i can function with management. I'm just wondering though if theres a link between the thyroid and blood sugar? Google says yes, but what are your experiences?

PS: i also have low BP, is that potentially linked? Tia Grin

Fruit, bread, pasta and rice ARE SUGAR!

I work with Type 2 diabetics and if you're getting reactive hypos then I'd guess you're prediabetic. What were your last fasting insulin and HbA1c levels?

I suggest you go low carb as soon as possible. Doubt it's related to the thyroid.

I do low carb and yes aware that carbs are basically sugar - sometimes there are no low carb options though! Currently working away and being fed a very 'normal' diet involving lots of bread and biscuity snacks which is bringing it to the fore of my mind Grin i'm having to do a lot of 'compensatory eating' iyswim

I cant remember the results of the tests but doctors were clear i was fine. My mum is the same way too and in her 50s, also recently tested and not ore diabetic. We have no family history of it.
