Can you wear a rash vest and shorts at your local swimming pool?

I’m yet to take my twins swimming and would like to try (with DH in two of course) but I’m really not comfortable wearing a swimming costume. Are you allowed to wear things like this in a public pool? Honestly I haven’t been to one since I was a kid so I have no idea!

I wear a high cut swimming costume and a pair of long men trunks over it

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 09/03/2019 16:01

Yes, it's perfectly fine.

MrsTerryPratcett · 09/03/2019 16:02

In my local one, it has to be proper swimwear. So a rash shirt is fine but a t-shirt is not.

However, there are people of all shapes and sizes and I tend to think that an air of confidence is more conducive to feeling OK than a cover-up. Because most people don't wear them that can feel more self-conscious than not.

What is your main worry?

As long as it's swimwear, surely it should be fine?

Fyi you can get really nice knee/legsuits (I have some maru ones, they're great)

I always wear a rash vest and board shorts. Never been commented on!

Yes it's fine.

Ours has a guide on the wall about what you can/can't wear and basically anything made from 'swim' material is fine. I've seen several people in a burkini in the pool, can't get more covered than that!

Thanks everyone, that’s good to know. I haven’t worn swimwear since I was a very slim 21 year old in a bikini - 15 years and twins later I just can’t face it. My thighs are quite upsetting (covered in thread veins, stretch marks and cellulite) and I hate my arms, terrible skin and scarring on my back, plus a very large scar on my arm that people stare at so I always cover it up. I just wouldn’t feel confident wearing a swimming costume. I’m a size 14 so I’m not obese, I just don’t think I can do it. Maybe when I’m more used to swimming and seeing other people of all shapes and sizes I’ll be less concerned but I’d be a lot more confident covered up.

Also, if you're going with kids and going to spend an age sitting in the shallow end while they splash about, it's warmer in a rash vest than a swimming costume!

SmarmyMrMime · 09/03/2019 16:38

If I'm taking the kids, I wear a shortie wetsuit as I find bobbing around the shallows bone chilling after about 15 minutes. The kids are in shorties too. I have been asked on holiday if I've been on the beach in it for cleanliness reasons, but that's not a likely problem around my home area!

I agree about projecting confidence. The swimming pool is the place that best displays the whole range of diversity of the human body. A person covered up and looking like they want the world to swallow them up will be more noticable than a confident person in whatever garment they are swimming in.

Twins will be a great distraction from whatever it is you end up wearing!
