Can anyone who knows Crufts explain something to me?

Never watched Crufts before and cluless about dog shows.

When each dog was being showed a banner came on screen at the bottom was what I assume was category and the breed.

But on top was what seemed like a mad jumble of letters and words. Something like 'Multi Ch something Otherword Wordword her' (made that one up incase you're wondering Smile) They all were vaugely similar but were different and some where really long too.

What's that about? Don't even know how I'd Google it to find the answer!!!

That's the dog's kennel name and the ch denotes a champion

Isn’t it the dog’s show name? Wonderfluff Chortlon Smithers the Third, or Fluffy to his family?

RobinHumphries · 08/03/2019 21:14

Not been watching it but it’s probably the official name of the dog. Like you could have Minarets Best Kept Secret as the name of the dog but for everyday use it gets called frankie

It's a kennel name, to those who know the breed I think it would tell them their lineage. Some dog "families" are particularly prestigious and win a lot. I think.

CMOTDibbler · 08/03/2019 21:21

Dog breeders often use the dogs formal name to indicate not only who bred the dog, but also the mum and dad. So I might have a dog who is Dibblers (my kennel name, so all the dogs I breed would have that) Choice (dogs name) out of Daisy (mum of dogs name) by Mort (dad of dogs name). Then if the dog has won enough at big shows they might be Br Ch (breed champion) Ag Ch (Agility champion) and theres a few more categories as well - a dog might be more than one of these

Many of the dogs are from other countries, so their names will be in the language of that country, eg Ch. Kleine Wursthund Von der Oberbayern.

Ch. denotes Champion, ie a dog which has won lots of other, less prestigious, dog shows which qualifies it to compete at Crufts.

The two / three letters at the start I believe denote a performance pedigree title. So CH (champion) NF.CH (national field champion) and there are multiple events they related to. The name has to be unique too which is why there isn’t just a “captain sparkles” because it’s probably taken. There is a name checker you have to use. They’ll also have the kennel club name in there somewhere and sometimes the owners name.

It's just the dogs name, CH at the front means champion. my dog is called CH (kennel name) (dog's name) (shown by.) When dogs are shown they generally have those different parts to their name.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/03/2019 23:17

@Jsmith99
Ch. Kleine Wursthund Von der Oberbayern. Grin
The official name of my aunt's dog Sandi was

Ah I see!! Makes sense now. Thanks all.

Have to as my first time ever seeing a dog show I really enjoyed it. I'm also slightly in love with the Bernese Mountain Dog.

The names show family lineage, so those in the know can see bloodlines. Growing up, we had Sapphire Moonmaiden Ramsey (Sapphie) at home- Moonmaiden was her mother’s family line.

As an adult, I had a rescue mutt, who was just a loving and gorgeous- no daft name.

Murphypoint · 09/03/2019 08:18

Yes so CH is champion but you can also have

JW Junior Warrant
IR Import Register

Breeders will have an affix. The affix is the show name that they are known by so It could be something like devonport so all your puppies will be called devonport something or other. My mum always used Barry Manilow songs = Davenport Sweet Caroline etc.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/03/2019 10:19

We had a KC registered corgi (as a family pet) whose proper name was Poppleberry Boycott, poor thing Grin

Quite sensibly, he didn't answer to it.

sonjadog · 09/03/2019 10:29

My dog had one of these names. He comes from champion lineage and was a champion himself before retiring to spend his days pottering around with me. He even has his own webpage!
