Just wondering if it's any good considering the price.

Thanks!

Not over hyped at all. It really is a magical elixir!

My anecdote: my first baby was four months old when I kisssd him after eating chicken satay. Wherever my lips made contact, his skin blistered up. It was later discovered he had a peanut allergy but on this day it was a Sunday and I was a completely inexperienced first time parent.

His the patch on his face was raw - not even any skin left. I walked up my high at with him but Boots and the chemists were shut. I randomly walked into the Holland And Barrett and burst into tears when I showed them his face. Honestly - it was horrendous. I don’t know why I didn’t take him to an emergency clinic - it was bad but hospital felt like massive overkill?

Anyway. The staff very kindly suggested a lower strength Manuka honey (I think it was five or ten) and helped me very gently smear some on the wound and then put a pad on.

Within 24 hours, the skin had healed to an acceptable non-raw, non-weeping state. I couldn’t believe it - a non steroid, non medicated substance had done such amazing healing.

When we finally got confirmation of a nut allergy a few months later, I told the dermatologist at the Evalina clinic at Guys / St Thomas’s about the honey and she was raving over it’s medicinal properties and said she much preferred we did that than use steroid cream on a tiny baby.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it's one of the most commonly counterfeited food products out there as demand for it massively outstrips supply. So make sure you get the real stuff!

cantfindname · 09/03/2019 07:14

It is seriously good stuff. But be careful what you buy, you need the stuff that is certified by the NZ government or, very often, it is just honey.

Birdsgottafly · 09/03/2019 07:14

What do you want it to do?

Igneococcus · 09/03/2019 07:15

It really depends what you want it for.
Treating skin infections, yes it can be very useful, eating it for undefined health benefits, probably not worth to spend all that money that you'd have to spend to get the real certified stuff.

My rabbit was “prescribed” this for a dental abscess which can be notoriously difficult to get rid off. Twice a day we washed out the wound with an antibacterial wash and packed it with Manuka honey and the abscess which the vet had deliberately stitched open closed and healed over about ten days. That was last summer and so far the abscess hasn’t reoccurred. I’d be inclined to give it a go on myself as a result.

We have a spoonful at the first sign of a sore throat in this house - works like magic!

lljkk · 09/03/2019 07:59

DH found prescription stuff useful after a festering skin on his hand wouldn't heal after a deep dirty cut. He's convinced M-honey helped a lot when other chemical topical anti-microbials didn't.

I would assume any version you buy from a shop is too weak to do anything, or counterfeit!

Crunchymum · 09/03/2019 08:08

Used a high grade manuka honey (expensive!) on the cat after she had an operation for a massive cut on her leg.

Wonder stuff.

Haven't had to use it since though.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 09/03/2019 09:54

Be careful putting it on open wounds because it can contain tiny bits of whatever.

I adore manuka honey I just can't afford it right how but I'm quite shocked Holland and Barrett put non medical stuff on tiny babies face

Worksed wonders for a nasty burn our dog had after a car accident that got infected. The vet was raving about it!
