I take them for migraine prevention and haven’t noticed any side effects. What are you taking them for and how are they making you feel?

HopeClearwater · 08/03/2019 20:14

.

nevernotstruggling · 08/03/2019 20:20

@MustStopSnacking28 I've been prescribed them for migraines too. I feel dreadful really dopey and exhausted I was wondering if this wore off as can't find anything online to suggest either way

I have them for anxiety and no side effects. I love them. This is very episodic low does use though.

Aaaahfuck · 08/03/2019 20:48

Which ones? I have 40 (mg?) propanalol. Tbh I've never really had any side effects. Of all the medication I take these are most innocuous. Sounds stupid but is it deff the beta blockers?

How long have you been taking them?

murmuration · 08/03/2019 21:04

My husband just started taking them and feels terrible. Light headed, dizzy, etc. Also cold feet and hands. According to the Dr they lower blood pressure and all that is consistent. He’s been on them about a month and has appt next week to talk about a change.

nevernotstruggling · 08/03/2019 21:09

@murmuration that's really helpful that's how I feel. Was starting to think I was going mad. I'm going to ask to switch back to amitriptyline

I found the first few weeks a bit bumpy, I recall a really tight chest but it passed as I got used to them.

I couldn't hack amitriptyline, felt like I was dragging my head across the floor in the mornings.

You have to find what works for you.

Witchend · 08/03/2019 21:13

DD2 had them for migraines and anxiety when she was about 10yo.
For the first week she could scarcely crawl out of bed, and I thought she would have to stop them.
The second week she was okay, but a little tired.
By the fourth week she was back to her usual self (minus migraines!)

Keep going! I know a lot of people who stopped on the first week.

goose1964 · 08/03/2019 21:14

Had them for blood pressure, triggered my depression which recovered when I was put on a different type of tablet

Buddyelf · 08/03/2019 21:17

I’m also on 40mg propranolol, 1 a day. They make me feel out of breath really easily, running up the stairs makes me feel out of breath which in turn makes me lazy I suppose. They make me feel tired and I get really cold feet. Other than that they’re ok.

Orchidflower1 · 08/03/2019 21:18

They made me feel so awful I stopped after just a few tablets. Lowered my bp far too much.

Mishappening · 08/03/2019 21:18

I was prescribed them for migraine and have taken a tiny dose of 2 x 5mg propranalol a day, as I had to reduce the dose because they caused me to become depressed.

I was then changed to bisoprolol in quite a large dose as I developed atrial fibrillation - I had to stop these as I turned into a weeping heap! I just keep my fingers crossed that I do not go into AF again.

It is not a good idea to stop beta blockers suddenly - they need to be reduced slowly under medical supervision.

Accountant222 · 08/03/2019 21:20

I had a racing heart and insomnia, it's a while ago and I can't remember which brand, I was going through a breakdown at the time

SeaToSki · 08/03/2019 21:20

THERe are lots of different ones, go back and ask to try another one. It really depends upon your genetics as to which ones give you bad side effects and which ones dont. Has it helped the migraines?

Caribbeanescape · 08/03/2019 21:21

I had propranolol for migraines and took them for about six months. I felt awful, really sluggish and exhausted. I also put on three stone, which I can’t seem to lose.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2019 21:21

Felt light headed and odd, and triggered my asthma so fortunately only on them three weeks

gamerchick · 08/03/2019 21:42

You're not supposed to be prescribed beta blockers if you have asthma. Confused or diabetes for that matter.

They're also safe to stop when you want unless you're on high doses for blood pressure.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2019 22:04

Gamerchick
My resting heart rate was 150bpm and I was hospitalised

nevernotstruggling · 08/03/2019 22:55

Thanks everyone this thread is quite helpful. It's propanalol I'm taking. The migraines have reduced in severity but it feels like they will break through any second. Also the bb are causing a pain in the back of my head like a hypertension headache so thinking maybe the dose is too high. The pain relief of amitriptyline was instant and I felt great but the long term side effects really frightened me.

What are the other migraine options? Mine were so bad I felt like such an impairment thigh I know it's stress. Work are referring me to occupational health too

I now only get full blown migraines occasionally but I have a foolproof method of treating one when it starts. I take a lorezepam which puts me to sleep and when I wake up the migraine is gone. GP fully supportive of this approach. Nothing else works.
